So, I was sitting here compiling the news for today’s “Best of the Rest” post, when I realized something: October 21, 2008 may go down as the single greatest day in gaming history. In fact, when you look at the games slated for an October release, October, 2008 could very well go down as the single greatest month in gaming history (for software).

Now, you’re probably thinking I’m an idiot… as per usual… but hear me out. Have a quick glance at the release schedule for October 21st:

BioShock (PlayStation 3)
Dead Space (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC)
Fable II (Xbox 360)
Far Cry 2 (PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3)
LittleBigPlanet (PlayStation 3)
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows (Xbox 360, PS2, PS3, PSP, Nintendo DS, Wii)
Star Ocean: The First Departure (PSP)

That’s just for one day! And if that’s not enough, Tom Clancy’s EndWar comes out on October 15th, and both Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 and Fallout 3 rear their heads on October 28th.

A few other notable titles coming out in October include: Guitar Hero: World Tour, Saint’s Row 2, SOCOM: Confrontation, Fracture, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, Crash Bandicoot: Mind Over Mutant, Legend of Spyro: Darkest Hour, Midnight Club: Los Angeles and Blitz: The League II.

This doesn’t take into account games like Rock Band 2, which have yet to announce release dates for platforms besides the Xbox 360.

For those of you who, unlike me, aren’t lucky enough to have an October birthday, what’re you all hoping to pick up?

Sad news out of ActiBlizzard, where several repots are indicating that a whole lot of people (read: over 150) have been fired as the new company continues it’s restructuring. In all, nearly 100 employees from Radical Entertainment and an additional 60 from High Moon Studios were told to GTFO over the past week.

“Activision Blizzard is committed to making the best games possible and has elected at this time to reduce the number of titles that Radical is developing from four games to two,” said Radical Entertainment’s human resources Vice President, Leah Rubin. “Therefore, we will be proportionately reducing the size of our studio.”

For what little consolation it’s worth, Radical Entertainment will continue to work on both Prototype and Crash Bandicoot: Mind Over Mutant. What will happen with High Moon Studios remains up in the air, as the license to the Jason Bourne franchise has been obtained by Ludlum Entertainment.
