MADD gets mad about GTA IV

As it Grand Theft Auto didn’t have enough parental critics, that latest organization to come out against the game is MADD.

Specifically, the group takes issue with “a game module where players have to drive drunk” as “drunk driving is a choice, a violent crime…not a game.”

MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) almost had a point. Almost.

I haven’t had a chance to play through the game yet. However, according to people who have, the game does not require you to drive drunk. It is a choice that you make as a player; the game recommends to you that you hail a cab.

In the past, the Grand Theft Auto series actually did require players to drive to the hospital after drinking, and while doing so, the player’s vision was blurred and the car went out of control, simulating a drunk driving experience.

Like I’ve said before, someone who is playing this game should be mature enough to make decisions about stuff like that and, more importantly, to know the fucking difference between a video game and real life. As a parent, you should be teaching you 17-year-old that drinking and driving is not cool. If they’re going to do it, it isn’t because they saw it in a game; it is because THEIR PARENTS did not have a big enough impression on them and they gave in to peer pressure.

MADD wants the rating of this game changed from M to AO. Seriously. Because and 18-year-old will make mature decisions but a 17-year-old will not.

Yes. Ratings need to be enforced. But more importantly DON’T BUY THIS GAME FOR YOUR 13-YEAR-OLD.

And even more importantly…teach your fucking kids not to drive drunk so that they don’t even make that choice in a video game, let alone in real life.

  1. I love how all these groups say that the game makes you do all these bad things. You don’t HAVE to drive drunk, you don’t HAVE to kill hookers, but you can. I think it’s a good thing that the game shows you that it’s impossible to drive drunk safely. If it rewarded you for doing it, then they’d have a point. BUT THEY HAVE NOTHING!

Sorry, this really pisses me off.

  2. Isn’t it better to simulate this experience rather than experiment with it in real life?
