Greenpeace: Microsoft, Nintendo Still Killing Mother Earth

The always cheerful people at Greanpeace released their latest edition of their “Greener Electronics Guide” with the fear-mongering headline “Company scores plummet in Greener Electronics Guide”. Sounds awful, doesn’t it? What could have made all these scores drop so significantly? Is Microsoft pouring oil on bald eagles? Perhaps Sony is splashing baby seals in the eyes with battery acid?

Nope. The cause of the drastic drop in company scores is due to Greenpeace changing their scoring system — I guess Sony was scoring too high for their liking.

Either way, the major console manufacturers break down like so: Sony (and Sony Ericsson) was the only company to score over 5-points on Greenpeace’s revised scale. Microsoft holds a two-point lead over Nintendo, with a score of… well, two.

Yes, once again Greenpeace reminds us that Nintendo hates the planet Earth, Greenpeace says that while the Wii is the most energy efficient of all the consoles, it still fails to meet Energy Star standards:

Nintendo’s score increases slightly with some improvement on toxic chemicals and climate policy. However, even Nintendo’s relatively energy efficient Wii console does not meet Energy Star standards that cover minimum energy efficiency standards for PCs and consoles.

So let me get this straight: Nintendo, the company that makes the energy efficient Wii, still scores lower than the power hog PS3 manufacturer Sony by five freaking points? Look, I agree that we need to start thinking green, but it’s things like this that seriously make me think Greenpeace is just making this up as they go along.

Especially when they change their scoring system to knock those companies scoring 6s and 7s down to 4s and 5s.
