Opinion: No, I Don’t Want to Have Sex with You
It’s mildly enjoyable when I go to a bar and someone tried to pick me up. I mean, hey, its the power of the boob. Yes, sir, you can buy me a drink and in return I’ll pretend not to notice you staring at my cleavage.
Xbox Live is NOT a bar.
I’d like to use my mic, but I’ve found that if I actually want to play a game, I can’t talk. Why? I have a vagina. Apparently that makes it OK for every Tom, Dick, and Harry (emphasis on the Dick) to hit on me. “Ooo, your voice sounds sexy”, “Ooo, I’ll protect you baby”, “Ooo, you up for some fun?”
Yes, I’m up for some fun. *Shoots you in the head* Just as I suspected… that was fun.
There are plenty of girls who like to game. I’m willing to bet that at any given moment, about a third of the people you’re playing with are girls. They just don’t talk or use a screen name that gives away their gender. Why? BECAUSE YOU JERKS RUIN IT FOR US.
Even if no one tries to sex me up, I’m either killed over and over and over again (Because that’s cool. Does killing a girl make you feel manly?) or everyone “protects” me (Because its so chivalrous to get in my way when I’m in the middle of owning someone and steal my kill).
And then there’s the uber-male loser who insists on making fun of me for every mistake. I must be stupid because I’m a girl. Yeah, no one else ever dies by making a mistake in a video game. Ass.
Here’s the bottom line: If I want to have some kind of sex with you, I’m not going to do it texting or talking to you on Xbox Live. In addition, my lack of penis doesn’t make me bad at video games.

I’ve never run into this endless flirting you’re talking about, and I speak online lots. Honestly, female gamers aren’t that uncommon anymore. No one is trying to “sex you up”, they’re being immature. Generally, mentioning that you’re not interested and directing the conversation back to the game works wonders.

Guys suck something fierce at most videogames, I find. I have the same problems as you, but usually I end up with the upperhand by epically smoking them. If they really get on your nerves in team-play, you can also piss them off real good by failing miserably on purpose and killing yourself/your team mates a lot.

You’re missing the point. People aren’t saying ‘deal with it’ with the view that it is ‘ok’ for people to be racist. They are saying that ‘this is how online play is’ and if you want to play online then you know what to expect. The article was written in a very flame-bait manner in order to stir up controversy and boost traffic to their website.
She could have written the article in a very different way without coming across so ’self righteously’. If she had done that then the types of responses you see here would not have eventuated. (At least not to the current level)
You’re remarks are quite foolish in trying to pigeonhole some of the posters here as being like emotionally stunted zombies. It is very likely that you don’t know a single person here personally and snide remarks about zombies don’t make you any more convincing then those that say ‘go iron my shirt’.
Sexual harassment and racism can generally be handled ok in a work environment because there are policies and procedures. When outside the work environment it is very difficult to ‘police’ (control) racist behavior towards other people.
Your perfect world scenario of everyone being nice to everyone during online play (with microphone) is not likely to come into fruition. (Even if that is what we should be striving for)
When it is all said and done what are your options? (I can think of at least 3):
1. Do nothing about racism and guys picking on girls etc and play online–get all crappy and upset when you play games
2. Do nothing about racism and guys picking on girls etc and play online–know what to expect when you go online and try to make the best of the situation (sometimes people do just play the game for what it is)
3. Quit gaming online–Not going to run into any problems with this option but you miss out on the benefits of going online and playing against people.
So the “Just deal with it” comments are in the end the best way to handle this situation when it is all said and done. Jumping up and down and crying about it not being ‘perfect’ and ‘justice’ etc will get you nowhere. Life is screwed up and we need to learn how to deal with problems.
If you get offended at a racist remark or sexism or whatever, then you just let the person doing the insulting win. They won because you got ‘hurt’ over their comments or whatever they said. For me, racism is such garbage that I would be a stupid moron to take offence at anyone who calls me something. In the end it is YOU who determines what things MEAN for YOU….do you understand?

While I’ll note that the futility of the article can’t be completely ignored [and I believe is fully understood], it is an opinion piece. And, such as it is with opinion pieces, people are going to add their two cents to it, whether they support it, don’t, or don’t care either way. Some of you have.

Such is life with anonymity. People are free to act however they like, and in many cases they think it’s hilarious to act like total idiots and jerks. It’s an unfortunate situation but, as many of the comments show, no amount of rational talk is going to put an end to it, someone will always think it’s amusing to respond in a misogynist manner, that or they think it makes them more of a man.
Trust me when I say this, those people are not the majority of us guy gamers, they’re very much the minority. However they irritate us so much that we leave our mics off as well. There is jerks like that in every game, it unfortunately comes with the territory of playing video games online. The ages of the people playing too is part of the problem, a lot of young kids playing that think crap like that it funny. Although there are players that are older and act like that, it is mainly younger kids who if in the real world talked like that to a women would get their asses handed to the by that women. My suggestion is to ignore them, but if the really piss you off, kick their ass in the game over and over again.

Although this may sound like the snide response of the average mail prick, I am genuinely curious, what if a guy hits on you jokingly, where sex is not brought up, but more for the humor of any sort of contextual relevance to the game.
What I mean is, being exceptionally crude comes with the anonymity of the intarw3b, it makes most guys fuck-heads. But I can imagine a fairly intellectual person also acting like a fuck-head of sorts? Have you ever been amused by the way a guy goes about hitting on you? If it were not so constant, would it be slightly amusing? When you do get MVP, does it make you feel better to talk trash knowing that some of those guys will be disappointed they got beat by a girl?
