Little Big Planet No JPEG Support, PS3 Eye Only

A keen eye from NeoGAF has caught a comment from Official Playstation.Blog writer Chuck Lacson regarding how you will get custom pictures into Little Big Planet. Replying to the question of “Will I be able to import my cat pics into my created levels?” Chuck wrote back:

yes you will! (If you have a PS Eye that is.)

So all of you who were watching Sony’s E3 2008 conference during the Little Big Planet/sales presentation, seeing Jack Tretton’s face within the game thinking “sweeet, custom images!” .. think again. Or at least, think with your wallet and buy a PS3 Eye cam. Also go ahead and buy some ink cartridges so you can print out your photoshopped bosses you thought you could have uploaded in the game.

Seriously folks, as a very sad Xbox 360 Vision cam owner, I can tell you these things are fairly useless. I mean, Totemball is of course the best game ever made and playing games of Uno where you might see a dick is fun, but other than that, these devices at the moment have only potential, but no real good use on consoles. So having to purchase one based on a single game is very lame.

There is speculation rampant as to why this decision is made. Possible copyright issues I don’t see as a problem so much as the cam can take a picture of anything, including whatever you have up on your monitor. My guess is hopefully the Sony worker is not up to date on Media Molecules plans, because these guys just seem too cool to their fans to allow this to happen. Just in case though, maybe you should shoot an email to let them know, there is still time before the game comes out to add this tiny feature called ‘uploading’. As I hate to read comments like this on the Playstation.Blog:

When you pick up LBP, be sure to get your PLAYSTATION Eye too.

…you can wear a cardboard box costume item or cardboard mask costume item and sticker it with a Kratos image using your PLAYSTATION Eye. You can even sticker/slap decorations your SackBoy directly…so the possibilities are endless.” -Mark Valledor

  1. Why even compare the PS Eye to the 360 Vision Camera? Can you use sound in your 360 Vision Camera? Can you even play Little Big Planet on a 360? The PS Eye is awesome. It makes in game voice chat hands free (any game) , supports many online inexpensive games (re Eye Toy type games) and of course the Eye Of Judgment card game which uses the PS Eye to transfer playing cards to life on screen in a board game. Get some facts before writing.

Voice chat in 360 is hands free (provided you have a head to put your mic headset on). Either way, keep reassuring yourself that the PS Eye is a great device (which I actually bet it is when used properly).

Still, this doesn’t make up for using Little Big Planet to move copies of the PS Eye is a crappy move.

  2. If you were a hardcore SONY fanboy you would already have the PlayStation Eye for video chatting, Eye of Judgment, and the Aquatopia screensaver so there would be no issue in having to use the cam…but I will admit, an upload feature would be nice so drop Media Molecule an email at hello@mediamolecule.com and let them know we want one.

Not everybody here is rich. We don’t want to spend money on some useless peripheral.

Hell, even I as a Wii owner does NOT want to dish out $100 for WiiFit, even though some Balance Board games will also come out later.

    It’s just bullshit.

  3. Mike. While I agree that it could suck to have only PSEye for importing your own creations, I think you downplay the use of this thing. Yes, of course you can put a silly headset on your head, but the PS Eye allows you to do this without thinking. Also the Eye of Judgement takes any 360 game to date that uses a web cam.

So I agree that the LBP news stinks, but the same Eye Toy that can be used for importing will also be allowing us to lip sync our sackboys without adding something to our heads. LOL

  4. I doubt this is to make you buy the PSeye, more like copyright issues with importing custom images.

  5. Personally I have been wanting to pick up a PS Eye for a while and this may just be a good enough reason to (of course not the only reason but you know what I mean) Ya it sucks that you can only upload images via the Eye but I bet it is not only for copyright reasons but also so it is not too easy to upload a pornographic image to the game. Yes it will be heavily monitored and those that would upload such images would probably be Immediately & Permanently banned from the PSN. Like said above someone could just point it at their monitor so we could get anything but I think it is more of a convenience feature then anything else. We all know that the minute it comes out someone just like in spore is going to carve out a shape in form of a penis and try to skin it with a picture of one. They are just trying to make it so it’s not too easy to do such a thing.

  6. damn, that kinda sucks. i was really looking forward to making an andy warhole level (something which precisely illustrates the kind of copyright issues they’re presumably trying to avoid). It still sucks though, it’s the first bad thing i’ve really heard about this game. 10-15 years ago i used to make windows platformers using this software called point and klick, they were invariably pretty awful (read: really really awful) but making them was a blast and i can’t wait to get my hands on LBP to relive those experiences. the recently announced pre-order bonus stuff is gimmicky but also just the kind of stupid toy stuff i hang out for (but gimme plushies!). in short: this is some bad news but the game still looks awesome.

Do you realize that that’s no confirmed at all? It’s from Kotaku, and if that were true it would be on the PSblog or MM would’ve said something about this already.

Mike Masashi Murakami III reply on August 7th, 2008:

I agree with Archis on this one.

With all the console companies crying about piracy lately, I am sure Sony wouldn’t let a game as huge as Little Big Planet be thrown into the fire like that.

This has been confirmed as bullshit BTW

That’s also completely irrelevant to the topic at hand.

  8. Has this PS Eye feature been confirmed yet, or is this just a misinterpretation of 3 sentenses quoted out of context that will be officially confirmed as bullshit by Media Molecule.
Bingegamer will once again be considered as crapy journalists for validating such a crapy news… History repeats itself

I have been waiting for Media Molecule to call bullshit on this from the start, but so far SCEE confirming that with their (not out of context) comments.

“Will I be able to import my cat pics into my created levels?”

“yes you will! (If you have a PS Eye that is.)”

Confirmation (so far). I seriously hope Media Molecule speaks up against this, but this is not the case as of yet.
