Official: Favre on Madden 09 Cover

What was but a rumor yesterday is now fact: Brett Favre is the cover athlete for Madden NFL 09. Now if you expect me to say something about Brett Favre that will degrade him, I’m sorry. I’m not about to randomly talk trash about Brett Favre — partially out of respect, and partially out of fear that he will come out of retirement and torment my beloved Lions once more.

But you have to wonder why they would use a retired player for Madden. Sure, this wasn’t the first time an EA Sports title had a retired player on their cover (read: Desmond Howard in NCAA Football 06), but the NCAA games haven’t cursed their cover athletes. Perhaps EA Sports is hoping to break the curse by featuring a retired player? But then again, this is Brett Favre — the one retired player under the age of 65 who could probably come out of retirement before 65.

…hell, maybe it was just a send off to John Madden’s man-crush on Favre. Regardless, he’s your 2009 cover athlete.
