Little known fact: In the Binge Gamer charter, which is a multi-chapter book bound in leather forged from human flesh and written in the blood of swine, there reads protocol 14.9.1:
Any editor or writer who cites Yahoo as a source, for any reason, shall immediately be dismissed of their duties to Binge Gamer and subsequently flogged with kendo sticks
Now, you may be wondering why we have this policy. Well, because of people like Anne Kadet, who have a tendency to write things down before doing any kind of research or utilizing simple common sense. In a piece entited “A Grinch’s Gift Guide“, Kadet explains why buying a PlayStation 3 is a terrible idea:
It’s all fun and games until the battery dies. Unlike its competitors, which use replaceable AA batteries, the PS3’s remote control is glued shut. When the battery goes, Sony customers have to blow $55 on a new controller. Sony says there’s an “environmental benefit” since gamers don’t have to toss their batteries on a regular basis, but Isidor Buchmann, president of battery-equipment maker Cadex Electronics, says captive batteries are becoming common because it’s cheaper for companies to eliminate the battery housing and hatch.

For those of you who are unaware, the PlayStation 3’s controllers, whether they be SIXAXIS or DualShock 3, do not use AA batteries because they have an internal battery which is charged via USB cable. Even if you somehow lose your USB cable, you can buy a replacement for $3 at Circuit City Best Buy.
Of course, considering that this is Yahoo we’re talking about and their Yahoo Games section is a cornucopia of ill-researched and poorly written stories, this doesn’t really shock me. But when I see this on Yahoo Finance… I can’t help but want to write a car buying guide. After all, being a video game journalist blogger I am totally qualified to write about automobiles.

Tthings that really bother me about her list:
1) Absolutely NO MENTION of the problems people have had with Xbox 360’s, the RROD, the lag-tastic online experience, etc.
2) Does she not know that most of us by Duracell or Energizer rechargeable batteries for our other game controllers in order to avoid buying PROPRIETARY equipment for our gaming hobby?
3) Vizio televisions under 30-inches AREN’T televisions; they’re monitors, and they should be treated as such.
Okay, really reaching for that last one, but as someone who owns both a Vizio AND a Sharp AQUOS, I’ve had more problems with the Sharp (dead pixels, anyone?) than with the Vizio.
*fumes*
#3 may be the most honest statement I’ve heard uttered by mankind in a long time. Who the hell needs a 24″ HDTV, anyways?
We were considering one for a while, but only because our guest bedroom is quite small, and it doubles as our home office.
That’s hilarious. What an idiot.
GDI! I wish I could leave comment on their articles.
That’s the other thing that bothers me, as you can’t tell the author that she may be wrong without searching for her contact info. Now THAT’S annoying.
Man, I’ve always been smug about the fact that my PS3 controller didn’t need batteries Now I’m gonna be panicking every time I put it on charge now. Just like every time I switch my Xbox 360 on I half expect to see the three red lights again. (I’m not paranoid, it’s happened twice before)
I don’t see how anything about the battery dieing is wrong or ill-informed. o.o
All rechargeable batteries have a limited life-span. My AA rechargables have a 1,000 charge lifespan. Although I do not see how the battery giving out and not holding a charge after 3 to possibly 10 years is a strike against a console.
Apparently I clicked through the link and read the corrected version while just breezing over the original text quoted here. The original definitely makes the author sound very ignorant. The only way I can see this fitting as a Grinch gift is if the author didn’t realize they were rechargeable.
This is like saying the iPod is worthless because you can’t change the battery on that.
I wouldn’t be too worried about the PS3 controller battery dying anytime soon. I’ve had my ps3 and 2 controllers since the PS3 release 3 years ago, and they’re still running fine. It’s been running almost constantly since that day actually, as I can’t be bothered turning it off at night and I don’t pay my electricity bill. It’s a damn tank!
I don’t know how many xbox 360 problems (RROD, unreadable disc, open tray) I’ve had though.

in my understanding… in the time it takes for a ps3 controller’s battery to die, you would need to spend more than $55 on AA batteries for the 360 (if they are not rechargable)+… Internal batteries are next gen, AA batteries match an annoying chord.. lol because what if you get a new game from a ride to the store for your 360 and your way excited to try it out, then you find out your shitty AA batteries are about to run out of energy, so you have to go back to where you just came from to get access to your controller… in PS3’s case, u just need to plug it in and play, if the chord is too short (default that comes with ps3) just go to a store (ONCE) and get urself a 5 meter usb chord…
i know what you’re sayin man -.-
