When UGO bought 1UP and it was announced that EGM would be DOA come FEB (Acronyms FTW), many of us older gamer folk were disappointed. Saddened. Heartbroken, if you will.
However, through it all nobody asked the obvious question: Why didn’t UGO take on EGM?
Well, Destructoid finally built up the hutspa to ask UGO Entertainment president Michael McCracken why, and his answer may surprise you.
…or not… I don’t know.
McCracken explained that UGO has always been an online entity and simply did not want to enter the magazine market.
UGO has been an online-only entity for the entire course of its 11-year history…
While we recognize and deeply respect the strength of the EGM brand and what that magazine has meant to gamers over the years, we have no experience with or desire to enter the magazine publishing business. The opportunity to buy the EGM brand independent of the publication itself was not something that was discussed in any of our negotiations.”
Hmm. Most interesting. Very to-the-point, too, which I like. However, I still don’t think that this will ease the aching hearts of EGM fans.
