If you haven’t heard, Tony Hawk: Ride has been something of an embarassment for Activision, with both horrid review scores and the game’s namesake taking to the Twitter to throw baseless accusations at the press. However, as the many Imagine games have taught us, if it sells then the critics can all go to hell.
Tony Hawk: Ride isn’t selling.
In fact, all estimates suggest that the game will sell but a measly 13,000 copies on the Xbox 360. Doing the math (13,000 x $120 per unit), that comes out to just around $1.56M.
I have a feeling that the game cost much, much more than that to make.
Personally, you will have a hard time convincing me that this is anything but a statement from the consumer that they’re tired of paying $100+ for a pack-in toy. Sure, while Activision may be a little pissed off over the fact that their bottom line is affected by this, the people who really suffer are the developers whose heads wind up on the chopping block when their game fails to perform.
