Novels based on games usually suck. Hard.
One time, I tried to read one of the plethora of Resident Evil novels that were published a few years back.  I have to tell you, the amount of pure, unadulterated rage I felt just from reading the first few paragraphs should have been enough to vaporize that book. Unfortunately, it still exists somewhere in my house along with such classics as the Goosebumps series and the novelization of Batman Returns.
There seems to be a glimmer of hope for those who would like to play games and still be considered literary-minded, though. Del Ray will be publishing the first novel (of a planned two) based on the Elder Scrolls series.
The Infernal City, which will hit shelves November 24, is about an evil floating city that has appeared over Tamriel that is raising the dead to kill living beings. Two warriors venture to the city to put a stop to the evil spreading across the land.
This novel, and the planned second one, will be written by best-selling author Greg Keys, who previously published several novels based on the Star Wars universe.
I hold out hope for this book. Tamriel and The Elder Scrolls series would work very well as a novel.  Considering the copious amount of literature found in the actual game, there’s ample room for other stories set within the game’s world.
