So It Begins… Super Street Fighter IV Announced

Super Street Fighter IV

Come on. In the back of your mind you knew that this was going to happen eventually. At the Tokyo Game Show (in Tokyo, of course), Capcom showed off the first teaser trailer for Super Street Fighter IV to the public — and to GameSpot, so they could show the rest of the world.

So what’s so new about Super Street Fighter IV? Well for starters the game’s roster is being bumped up by (about) eight characters. While not every character has been decided (or Capcom just doesn’t feel like telling us just yet), we do know that one of the characters that will be included in SSFIV is fan favorite T. Hawk. the other character is “Juri”, a female character.

Another change in Super Street Fighter IV involves some tweaking of the fighter balancing. While game producer Yoshinori Ono didn’t explicitely tell Gamespot what this meant, I would like to think that it’s code for “we’ll fix Sagat”. Additionally, all returning fighters will get new Ultra Combos, just to further shake things up.

The biggest changes to speak of can be found in SSFIV’s multiplayer. Ono hinted that SSFIV will have an online lobby system (JW: About damn time), and work is being done to improve matchmaking. The downside: SSFIV will NOT be compatible with Street Fighter IV, meaning that many hardcore SFIV fans will have to make a tough decision when Super Street Fighter IV is released next Spring… or not, since Capcom hinted that current owners of SFIV will get some special content when they buy SSFIV, although they won’t go into what it is.

So the question now is… when should we expect Super Street Fighter IV Turbo? Or maybe Super Street Fighter IV Turbo Hyper Remix — The Anniversary Edition? Oh, what’ll it matter — we’ll buy them all anyways because they’re that good.
