SEGA of America shitcans 30 employees

sonic-unemployed

As the economy continues to spiral towards the black abyss of depression, the “recession-proof” video game industry (insert eye roll here) continues to feel the pinch of hard times. The latest victims? Some 30 employees currently who formerly worked for SEGA of America.

In a statement issued to EDGE Online, SEGA of America explained that because of the economy crashing and burning like TWA 800 (too soon?), SEGA has to take measures to cut back costs to “ensure long-term success”.

Sega of America has grown at pace with the booming videogame industry, but at this time of economic recession, harsh retail landscape, and the reality of business challenges to profitability, we must take steps to reduce our cost structure and ensure long-term success.

What I’ve always found personally frustrating about SEGA is that they have some truly excellent titles that get almost zero exposure (Valkyria Chronicles, for instance) while the Sonic franchise is almost forced down our throats.

I mean, I love the hedgehog, but… damn.
