Preface: Obviously you’ll be needing a copy of Resident Evil 5 to play RE5 Versus. If you don’t own it already, feel free to check our review to help decide whether it’s the right zombie apocalypse game for you.

We all remember the uproar when gamers first caught wind of Capcom’s decision to keep the RE5 Versus mode separate from the game’s launch. Of course, the “already on the disc” rumor that started after it hit the PSN and XBLA only made matters worse, triggering a response to the beloved Capcom’s folly (which is still under appeal) similar to this.
So what happens when you purchase the RE5 Versus mode?
PS3 owners are greeted with a measly 351KB download that installs so fast you won’t even be sure it actually worked, while Xbox owners get a significantly larger download (1.8MB). I ended up installing the download twice simply because I couldn’t believe it worked so damn fast. Thought me noggin’ was playin’ tricks on me, I did.
Despite this, all that really matters is whether it’s worth the $5 price tag, right?
Right.
So let’s take a look at what you’ll be getting.
Appearing in lieu of the “???????” found at the bottom of the “Play Game” menu, RE5 Versus offers four new modes of play:
- Slayers - Free-for-all where you try to kill the most enemies and rack up combos to get the best score
- Survivors - Get a higher score by hurting the other players more than they hurt you
- Team Slayers - Like Slayers, but with teams
- Team Survivors - Like Survivors, but with teams
Thankfully, Capcom decided to keep the zombies present for Versus battles. I like this because the concept of Revolutionary War era combat (only with better guns) was very unappealing to begin with. Perhaps the zombies could save Versus and make it a must buy.
But they don’t.
It would have worked great if but for the intense lag and clipping that eats at the Versus mode’s innards like a ravenous parasite (disgusting, I know).
Example: When playing as Chris, you typically are given a shotgun. And typically, said shotgun sends zombies soaring through the air with a single blast, if not leaving them staggered and slightly disoriented.
However, I’ll often find myself firing off one or two rounds, getting a liquor bottle smashed over my face/a hatchet to the shoulder, and only then will the zombie feel the heat of my shotgun—three or four seconds after the shot connected. This is bad. Very bad.
Overall, the PvP aspect of Versus is incredibly lackluster. As expected, every duel turns out to be nothing more than a battle of “Who can aim the fastest?” or more so, “Who has the bigger gun?” Really, this game needs the option to run and shoot simultaneously. Without it, it’s like a shiny new sports car with no tires: sad and useless.
When it comes down to it, Versus barely seems to be able to sustain itself, and oftentimes you’ll find taking just about any action results in loads of lag. Even picking up items is a process, forcing you to wait several seconds before your character moves from his “bend over and pick that shit up” pose to actually grabbing the item. RE5 just wasn’t meant for more than two players, and very, very rarely would I experience similar problems in any of the other online modes (Mercenaries FTW!).

Overview
From the moment I loaded up RE5 Versus, I found myself fantasizing about Mercs co-op instead (which is easily better than the main game itself). This lack of fidelity assured me that Versus just can’t offer the same blissful experience the rest of the game so readily provides.
Of course, if you’re that desperate to milk the most out of your RE5 experience, be my guest. In my opinion, you’re paying five dollars for a mode that really should have been on the disc in the first place—but that’s your choice.
All in all, this expansion doesn’t do much for the game. Perhaps if Capcom added the option to move while shooting, it could have worked. But they didn’t. This paired with the god-awful lag and bland game variety is likely to lead to a serious case of buyer’s remorse in countless RE5 fans. While it’s not completely unplayable, I already know I won’t be coming back to it unless Capcom does some major patching.
Check it out if you want. Or you can buy some better, less frustrating DLC. It’s your call.
And no, I didn’t forget it:

HOW DO YOU GET JILL TO WISTLE IN VERSES MODE ? WHAT BUTTINS DO YOU PRESS?
Alright, folks. Pay attention, because I’m only gonna post this once.
HOW TO GET JILL TO WHISTLE IN VERSUS MODE (in three steps or less)
Step one: Buy a headset.
Step two: Set it up accordingly.
Step three: During gameplay, whistle into it.
Rinse. Repeat.
Honest to god, man, I have no clue what you’re talking about.
terrace dont listen to this dickhead. you press the r3 and l3 buttons at the same time. you dont have to be such a dick perry just cause you dont know the answer. damn man
Sir, I suggest you develop a sense of humor.
You’re right, I didn’t know the answer, but I’ve also never come across this “whistling” phenomenon during my tour of the RE5 online play. I certainly don’t doubt its existence (as your comment thoroughly explains how it’s done), but I really think you need to chill back and not take my facetious comments to heart.
Thank you for answering Terrence’s question.
The wistle is jill and sheva’s taunt. Chris and wesker also have taunts that are different. Taunts make enimies focus attention on you if you do it. To taunt just click in both analog sticks. Wesker has a special attack if you push the analog sticks up and in.
click L3 and R3 at the same time (if your on PS3)
if not i have no idea what u to do
did you finaly unlock the versus mode for re5?if yes how did you do it?
Press the L3 and R3 together, the character will then whistle and attract the attention of other zombies (good for if your counterpart is in trouble in mercs)
I downloaded the versus mode from PS store and nothing happened. how do I start it.
thanks
After you install it, you click “PLAY GAME” on the main menu. Then, at the bottom where it normally says “????????” it should say “VERSUS”. Click that, and you’re in.
nothing came up in the menu. mercenaries is still the last on the list
it didnt start. nothing changed in the menu.
i installed it 4-5 times….nothing
