April Fools: Nintendo Joins “HD Remix” Craze – Two Screens

With Capcom leading the way on the PS3 and 360 in remaking games for the high definition gamer in mind (as well as promising more, Nintendo is taking it upon themselves to breath new life into classic games as well. Being released as WiiWare titles, two SNES gems will start this new venture going for $15 a pop.

The first is Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, which if you were to just look at the screenshot from right, it is easy to imagine this game coming out looking like a Braid title with the original already having a very artistic look. Well, they took what I was thinking and multiplied it by a million, check the screenshot below.

Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor and let me find fifteen dollars to make this purchase.

On second thought, let me go ahead and find some more money, as the other game being released with new HD graphics, is….The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

God bless them for not being cheap and going with Wind Waker graphics.

You now may be asking yourself, “WAITAMINUTE THE WII CAN’T DO HD!?!”

Well you were right. As the biggest HD remix of them all.. the console itself. Yes, ever since the advent of the Wii emulator Dolphin now being able to support full 720p graphics (see Super Smash Bros running in HD off PC video if you don’t believe it), Nintendo figured they must not only match what the hacking scene is doing with this emulator, but one-up it by offering original titles.

Never fearing the add-ons, Nintendo will be releasing an attachment for the Wii that will be able to output up to 1080i (with already released Wii games being upscaled). Is this the N64DD all over again? Or for those us outside of Japan, is this going to be like the 32X? .. ie.. a failure. Only time will tell.
