Midway Ponders Sale of MK Franchise

UPDATE: Midway says they aren’t “actively” trying to sell Mortal Kombat franchise – Edge

According to court documents obtained by website netDockets, part of publisher Midway’s road to recovery could include the sale of the Mortal Kombat franchise to another publisher.

The sale is but one of many milestones that Midway is looking towards as it attempts to pull itself out of the bubbling cesspool of mounting debt and lagging revenue generation. In fact, Midway has already met one of their other goals, signing a distribution deal with Ubisoft for The Wheelman, aka “that driving game starring Vin Diesel”. The money from this deal, according to the court documents, will be used to pay bonuses for its remaining staff.

…no, that’s not a typo. According to the documents, the money from the Wheelman sale, along with an additional $3.75 million that has already been set aside to pay bonuses. Because, you know, dishing out bonuses when your company is $50 million in the red is a smart fiscal move. Especially when you still owe former employees back pay — which they’re cutting, by the way.

Either way, getting back to the idea of selling Mortal Kombat — I don’t take it seriously, partially because Midway is already working on a new entry, but just for the sake of argument let’s say that they do sell the franchise. I have a suggestion:

C’mon, Capcom. Make it happen. It would be awesome.
