I am the only editor here at BG who has any appreciation for Doctor Who. You can ask Allison if you don’t believe me — I am freaking in love with this show. So, as you can imagine I was pretty upset heartbroken when the current Doctor, David Tennant, announced that he would be leaving the show after 2009.
Rumors were abound about who would be the next Doctor. Some thought David Morrissey would be a good decision, while others were convinced that Catherine Zeta-Jones would be the first female doctor. As it turns out, the role went to a previously unknown actor by the name of Matt Smith.
Smith will be following the man who is arguably the most popular and beloved Doctor of all, David Tennant when Tennant leaves the show at the end of 2009. According to Smith, it’ll be a challenge to fill those rather large shoes:
David Tennant has made the role his own, brilliantly, with grace, talent and persistent dedication. I hope to learn from the standards set by him. The challenge for me is to do justice to the show’s illustrious past, my predecessors, and most importantly, to those who watch it. I really cannot wait.
I’m not sure how many of you out there watch Doctor Who, but I have hopes for this guy. At 26 he will be the youngest to take on the role, which keeps in line with the mythos (where every regenerated Doctor is younger than the last). I’m looking forward to seeing him in action and expect that he’ll do an excellent job.
And if not, after G.I. Joe tanks maybe Christopher Eccleston (my Doctor) can come back… some how… okay, I’m just wishing now.
