You know, away from Microsoft I’m sure Aaron Greenberg is a great guy. I’m sure he has a loving wife and cute little mutants children. I’m sure he waters his lawn in khaki shorts and pulled-up black socks and donates to charity.
But when he’s working the Microsoft PR circuit, he’s a colossal dunce.
Case in point: The February NPD Sales Figures are out and Sony’s seen both PS3 and PS2 sales drop (PS3 slightly, PS2 some 62%). Naturally, this has Greenberg shitting rainbow sherbert. Speaking with Gamasutra’s Chris Remo:
What we hear from our partners is that it’s not just PS3, it’s also PS2 down 62 percent year over year. With that business declining, and with the PS3 business declining, it’s been described to me as hemorrhaging at retail right now, and it just keeps getting worse.
I’ve never been a big fan of Microsoft and Sony taking shots at each other for one simple reason: No matter who wins their little war of words, at the end of the day Nintendo is still the dominant force in the industry. But this isn’t the comment that has people in such a tiff. No, that came later, when Greenberg called out Killzone 2 sales:
If that content was sold at retail, it would be one of the best sellers across all platforms. It would have outsold Killzone 2.
Nevermind that there is no raw data to support this claim, let’s take a more practical approach. Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned was released on February 17th, 2009 on Xbox LIVE. Killzone 2 was released on February 27th, 2009 for PlayStation 3.
February is a 28-day month.
I don’t think I have to tell you that there is a leap in logic here.

Even if they came out the same day though, GTAIV has an installed base of 5 million + users on the 360 alone, if just a small percent of those people bought L&D (which everyone claims is better than the Niko storyline as well as having a better multiplayer mode), it would have outsold Killzone 2, which seemed to be advertised on hype alone..no commercials or what not.
