With that out the way, lets get down to business on this new information. The Wii, which seems to have been “sold out” more than it was available, has finally been sold to every person that wanted it bad enough to wait outside retail stores well before opening and/or going to the devil known as eBay.
Bob McKenzie (SVP of GameStop) has now come out saying, “..three years later, we finally have enough inventory on the shelf, and we’ve got a couple of weeks in supply of this.”
Great news for those of you who want to play as a plumber who races, plays tennis, and even brawls. For those of us enjoying the dust collecting on our system, this might mean that money spent on advertising the system itself will go toward game development (yeah right, we all know this means more Wii Fit boards being made).
What about a price drop? McKenzie doesn’t believe so. Taking into account that the UK has raised the price of the system might make one believe him to be right. I disagree however, when you think about why the Wii sells, a big part of that is the hype that surrounds the machine that no one can find. If people can find it, the hype dies. So Nintendo can bring that hype back by bringing the price down fifty bucks, in doing that, they can possibly re-create that demand for the holiday season, as well as once again be comparable to the Xbox 360’s $199 price point.
Does Nintendo really need that hype? Honestly no. As a Wii owner since launch, I really believe they need more variety in the games they make, but since they don’t seem to be doing that, Nintendo does need to make sure all eyes stay on them somehow. I do not know the last time a console has had more hype then the games themselves, but at some point the bubble will burst and the casuals will stop buying games and sell their systems. At that point, the only people left having a Wii is the actual gamers, and for us to stick around, we will need some games (bring on the Pikmin 3, Kid Icarus, and hell… another Zelda).
