E3 2009: Hands On – Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles is one of the few Nintendo Wii games that I actually enjoyed. It was a damn fine rail shooter that gave players a new perspective on the whole Resident Evil canon leading up to Resident Evil 4 & 5. But one of the biggest complaints was that the game was lacking some of the key events in the RE timeline: namely Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica. Capcom hopes to remedy this slight (as well as separate you from $50) with their upcoming Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles.

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles is a straight-forward on-rails shooter, much like The Umbrella Chronicles, but there are a few key differences. For instance, Darkside Chronicles will allow for players to evade attacks and headshots will be easier to perform this time around — so long as, of course, you have a steady hand.

The biggest addition, however, is true co-op play. In Umbrella Chronicles, while you could have two people play (after unlocking the mode), you both controlled the same character. Now players have the option of picking their own individual characters and by “option”, I mean “Player 2 gets stuck with whichever one Player 1 didn’t want”. Not that it matters, but still.

Take a look at this gameplay video, in which I get to play with both an awesome Capcom employee and Itagaki 2099 himself, WCG Ultimate Gamer’s Dante.

I can’t go a day without some kind of dig at the readers… vultures.

Anyways, the game looks pretty damn good for a Wii game and works as an excellent reimagining of both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica. Although, in part of our discussion with Capcom that sadly wasn’t filmed, it was pretty much confirmed to us that this is as close to a REmake-style reminagining of Resident Evil 2 as we’re going to see for a while. Which bummed me.

We couldn’t get a straight number out of Capcom regarding number of stages and missions, but we do know that many characters from the franchise will be making appearances in Darkside Chronicles, including very familiar faces like Ada Wong and David Bowie Albert Wesker.

So, when can we expect to see Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles? …this winter. On Wii.
