Current Trends in Industry Marketing: Copy Nintendo

Lenovo IdeaCentre A600

The continued march in Nintendo’s footsteps—er—continues with the unveiling of Lenovo’s IdeaCentre A600 desktop, a device utilizing a motion-sensitive remote that functions—in essence—exactly like a Wii-mote.

In further mimicry and attempt to emulate the success of the Wii, director of marketing strategy and programs, Ninis Samuel, explains to PCWorld some of the software showcasing the A600’s new features:

“We have an example of a bowling game [where] you can wave the remote and that actually controls your game.”

Ah, yes.  It doesn’t get any better than that.

The titles of prospective games for the A600 haven’t been announced yet, but I’ll bet anyone that Wii emulators will be popping up shortly after this technology hits the market.

Nintendo will assuredly be pissed.

Of course, there are some aspects of this peripheral that could really serve to be quite useful, such as the “air mouse” functionality which allows users to control the cursor without a hard surface and from a distance.

Also fascinating is the phone functionality of the remote, which Samuel sums up explaining:

“If you have telephony software on your PC like Windows Live or Skype, you can use your remote to make those phone calls because it essentially can act as a phone.”

Still, while the Wii has been incredibly successful, I would kind of like to see an expansion of the concepts that makes the Wii innovative rather than straight-up imitation.  However, in some ways Lenovo seems to be taking this approach, and oddly enough, the more I read about this PC, the more I like it.
