An Australian lobbyist group is calling for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to be reclassified by the Australian Games Ratings Board due to the inclusion of a level in which you side with terrorists and make your way through an airport, killing civilians.
Considering the game has a MA 15+ rating*, the highest rating in Australia, this change would effectively ban the game in Australia.
Sipping on a cool can of Foster’s** and speaking with the Sydney Morning Herald, Australian Council on Children and the Media President Jane Roberts tried to paint Modern Warfare 2 as a guide on how to be a terrorist:
The consequences of terrorism are just abhorrent in our community and yet here we are with a product that’s meant to be passed off as a leisure time activity, actually promoting what most world leaders speak out publicly against.
If that material was on the internet about how to become a terrorist, how to join a group and how to wipe out people – that would be removed because it would not be acceptable.
Typical political hot air being blown by a woman who has not seen the final product — nor has she read into the matter at all. If she had, Mrs. Roberts would have learned that you are, in fact, playing as an undercover CIA operative. Also, according to Infinity Ward, this section would be “skippable“.
Knowing Australia’s long history of banning games, there is a very real possibility that Modern Warfare 2 could be added to this list.

I doubt that the game will be reclassified and banned by the OFLC but I do think that these groups need to wake up to themselves and realise that this is just a video game and that all this time and effort should be spent on bigger issues in the world other than a damn video game. This moron is judging a game that hasn’t been released and has not seen the final product..how can you judge something when you don’t have all the facts. F#CK I hate these groups that are against everything…you can’t even take a shit without being judged.

the irony here is that there actually is, if you look hard enough, instructions on how to become a terrorist on the internet. Somebody should point that out to Jane Roberts, because it is painfully obvious she hasn’t done the research.
