You know, there is a lot to be said about somebody who always strives for perfection. But where do you go after you have actually achieved perfection?
If you’re The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time director Eiji Aonuma, you vow to not quit until you’ve bettered yourself. From Nintendo Power:
I’m happy that a title I worked on some time ago remains highly praised to this day, but that also shows how none of the subsequent games in the series have surpassed it. As someone who is still working on the series, I have mixed feelings about that. Because I haven’t yet surpassed it, I can’t quit. Surprisingly, that simply motivation may be the reason I continue to work on the Zelda series.
You have to admire a man who refuses to settle. However, as we have seen with The Godfather part III and the second Star Wars trilogy, if you try to top perfection you’re just liable to mess the whole damn thing up.

All he needs to do is make a game that is not just another typical zelda repeat. Take the story further. Go new places and escape the typical zelda similarities. Give us some fresh story and gaming perspective by making Gannon the main playable character with missions of kidnapping damsels, hiding the triforce etc.
Zelda’s a nice franchise, but windwalker was the only title that attempted to go somewhere drastically different. TP felt more like a revisit to OOT, again picking up the same ol’ same ol’ in the zelda universe.
you act like that’s a simple task. sway too far from the original zelda aspects and you’ll have die hard fans raging at you. stay too close and you’ll have the same fans complaining about rehashed ideas.
why do you think TP felt like OoT? because the fans DEMANDED a “next gen” OoT, and they got it. what happened when they got it? OH GOD SAME GAME WHAT IS THIS NO NEW IDEAS!!!! what about wind waker? OH GOD WHY IS THIS SO COLORFUL WHY CANT I JUST WALK TO PLACES THIS IS RETARDED!
fact of the matter is, when you have something considered to be one of the best games of all time, subsequent revisions will almost never live up to the past and feel like the same thing since you need to keep the core mechanics and storyline in check, otherwise you’d have a completely different game on your hands.
I’m one of those who believe OoT was and is fantastic…but improved upon by MM and TP, and tWW came close. They were standing on the shoulders of giants, having using what OoT did first and improving upon it. Yet, we still get idiotic die-hard fans who go on about how great the game was for the time because it was such a huge step forward, yet shun any innovation in recent games. Even if the perfect Zelda game was made, die-hard fans wouldn’t accept it for what it is; OoT will always be better in their eyes until they remove their rose coloured nostalgia glasses.
Aonuma, you have already done that twice, but for Din’s sake, don’t listen to fans…(maybe this is a little ironic)
Windwaker was better than ocarina.
hahahahaha, are you kidding??? yeah right.
Doubt he’s kidding, but Wind Waker didn’t quite reach that mark. If it had been in production for another year or two, and all filler segments replaced with content of equal quality to the rest of the ‘good bits,’ it would be. Wind Waker was, in my opinion, also the only Zelda game to actually be harmed by lack of difficulty.
I’m sorry windwaker was not better then ocarina.
Anyone who says so has never played any of the original games. And by original I mean anything before OOT.
While I love the original Zelda, and I adore Zelda:Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time is a great culmination of Zelda Gameplay, graphics (at that time), and storyline.
I’d go so far as to say that even Zelda:4 Swords for Gameboy was better then Windwaker.
Twilight Princess was a better game than Wind Waker, which was simply passable.
As was already said, Zelda has become formulaic and boring. They need to mix things up a bit more. Make the dungeons longer and more interesting, and make exploring the overworld entertaining, not just a holdover until its time to get to the next dungeon. New bosses (no more rehashes!) as well.
There’s much more, but if we got the above I’d be happy.
I don’t see how anyone could say Windwaker sucked. Did you even understand or even follow the story? The story was bad ass! Quit looking at how “dumb” the graphics were. The graphics in my opinion was a nice change of pace, but come on, look at that storyline! Based on hyrule being flooded and the islands were simply the mountain tops of the old hyrule!?! Just too cool of a story. Not to mention the fact that you got to stab Ganon in the head at the end, complete with a little blood! Come on people, if the graphics would have been just like OOT or Twilight, I doubt half as many people would be complaining. I loved every Zelda game and, in my personal opinion each and every one, including those after OOT, have surpassed the last in one way or another. Twilight extended the story some while bringing back stuff from OOT that wasn’t in Windwaker while also bringing the fighting mechanic from Windwaker, which was great. I swear Zelda fans are never happy. I can’t even see that big of a resemblance to OOT in Twilight besides the more realistic graphics. The fact that they made an action sequence where you fight on a horse trying to help a horse and wagon across the land was priceless! I didn’t expect that in a Zelda game, yet they did it and it seems like nobody noticed.
gannon got stabbed in the head on OoT as well…
@ gregdazeldalover
i completely agree with that statement.
its seems as if the majority of people who play zelda games are such traditionalists about the series.
windwaker had probably the most mature zelda story to date. The most insane part of that story is the fact that the link featured in windwaker had to prove himself a hero rather than just being one from the get go. There are so many things about the story for that game that rip through the other zelda games, it’s hard to imagine how anyone that is so immersed in anything zelda they would over look the beauty of that game. Every game has its problems, the graphics for windwaker was not one of them.
back @ Hugh Dichs
Thank you for agreeing. Not too many fans will agree or have the balls to. It’s not just simply the problem of being traditionalists, it’s the fact that most traditionalists want something new and yet they hate it when it changes. COME ON PEOPLE! I love every Zelda game probably pretty evenly. Some have a good piece here and there where others have good pieces in between those. I don’t know, even Zelda II The Adventure of Link had some great pieces to it. The orchestrated music (albeit in MIDI format since it was the NES), great magic spells, finally full fledged RPG elements, awseome fighting techniques that most were only possible in the sidescrolling format that everybody hated and a deeper story and actual towns than that of the 1st. I don’t know, maybe I change see beauty where others see ugliness.
The change should be a can in that last sentence of my last post for any of you that were confused.
Wind Waker was mediocre for several reasons completely unrelated to plot. It was the gameplay that really brought it down. The triforce quest was unnecessarily tedious: finding maps, collecting rupees, then finding the piece was boring in itself but then you have to multiply that 8 times. Not to mention the parry system made the game easy as hell. This has nothing to do with the graphics or the story, even if I found them incredible I would still insist that this is a subpar Zelda game.
@hurrrrrrrrr- granted, the forced SAILING in WW was a bit tedious but it brought a hella new chunk of things to the series, grappling hook mechanics, duo dungeons, stealing enemy weapons, original bosses, etc. and seriously a zelda hasn’t been difficult since aLttP outside of puzzles.
OoT was good but the first 3d. MM and WW improved on what was there with all the diversity in gameplay and trippy new plos
@ iCANhasBETTERgame
Great post. Finally yet another opinion that supports mine.
@GregDaZeldaLover
AWESOME! I’ve never found another Zelda fan who liked WW. I actually loved that game. I’ve played every Zelda game, and I must say that, based on plot alone, WW is in my top 3.
The fighting/parry mechanics being easy as hell? Whats wrong with that??? You’re the freakin Hero of Time! Pwning the random guys in a dungeon SHOULD be easy, because a dungeon is NOT the random battles in it, if anything random battles are filler for puzzles and plot. Maybe keep that in mine.
Not to mention, everyone complains about sailing being tedious, but do u not remember duck-rolling across the friggin plains as child-link in OoT as being tedious as hell? And that was on the N64, so the area wasnt even that big, what did u expect when consoles got better and allowed for more open expansiveness? Instant teleportation to zones?
For me, it goes: OoT,WW,TP,PH,aLttP as my top 5 zelda games.
Here’s a suggestion to the Zelda developers, dont listen to the fans other than this single suggestion
just as you start making a new Zelda, get a smaller, second team together to use the Twilight Princess engine (or a new on) and remake Wind Waker with the next-gen gfx. I keep getting a visual of TP graphics Link on a boat as its all hella dark and stormy. It looks pretty sweet.
Anyway, I bet that if the cell-shaded graphics were replaced with TP graphics (and maybe one or two childish elements that fit more with cell shading than anything else) that Wind Waker would be the proper successor/equal to OoT. Fans of the old games didnt like WW cause its graphics were ‘childish’ or the game was ‘too easy’ but i bet that you wouldnt complain about it being too easy if the parry-system from WW was on a TP looking game. Seeing link slice and dice like that would be EPIC every time. So, WW pleased some looking for a change, but the old-hats didnt like it. Then, TP pleased the old-hats for being akin to OoT, but it seemed ‘rehashed’ because it was similar. SO! you combine the best parts of WW and TP and I bet you’d have the trump-card game (oh, and if this ever happens, dont sell it at full price because im sure people will complain that its not a whole new game and therefore should be cheaper)
XFD OCARINA OF TIME SUCKS SHIT
Good, Nintendo is letting their core gamers go to waste and focusing on the new crowd they have recently attracted. I have no problem with them bringing in new crowds of people, in fact I try to recruit as many people as possible into the gaming world. But come on I’ve loved Nintendo since I was 5 and I got an NES as my first game console. Now they’re just going to abandon me because they want to appeal to the masses that after a month or two of playing will never look at the system again? I mean I have a Wii and an Xbox 360 and I bought the 360 primarily for Ninja Gaiden 2, Mercs 3 and RE5 when it comes out… but I’ve ended up buying so many other games for it because they’re making legit games. Wii however isn’t producing anything so please WTB more Zelda!
are you the creator of zelda, ocarina of time? if you are, can i ask some questions? email me at skullgirl96@yahoo.com
OCARINA OF TIME AND MAJORAS MASK ARE THE BEST EVER, AND BE NICE TO THE GUY, HE IS A NICE GUY. YOU SHOULD BE HAPPY HE CREATED THESE GAMES!!!!!!!!!!
i wish to see another story attached to majoras mask like majoras mask was attached to ocarina of time
