NXE Causing Tons of Strife for Xbox 360 Owners

UPDATE 2.0: Microsoft makes more promises.
UPDATE: Major Nelson feels your pain, and assures us all that Microsoft is working on the problems.

Guess who’s back, dudes and dolls. That’s right, several Xbox 360 owners who have downloaded the NXE are now reporting that their consoles have gone to the great beyond, victims of the infamous Red Ring of Death.

While some claim that the issue only affects those who have modded consoles, however it seems that almost all users are having issues with their NXE download. The Xbox forums are ablaze with complaints. Here is just a small sample of the complaints being made against the NXE:

  • Audio cutting out
  • Incompatibility with HDTVs
  • Three separate complaints that the internal disc drive doesn’t work
  • Even while, oddly the HD-DVD drive works fine
  • System lockups
  • And the dreaded Red Ring of Death
  • It’s obvious that Microsoft has a serious problem on their hands. Microsoft treated the NXE as this giant revolution in the way we were to view home entertainment. But rather than giving Xbox 360 owners the ultimate in home entertainment, they seem to have given them a giant buggy mess.

Even though we will all be at VGXPO over the weekend, we’ll be sure to keep you up to date on this developing “shit-hit-fan” situation.

Out of million system update, I would expect some issues…

      Works fine for me… it’s great…

      keep the fud train rolling!

      mighty ps3 4eva, amirite?!!!

    3. PS3Luva says:

Even I know that this is propaganda instagated by PS3 fanboys and other jealous people. I own a PS3, but I’m getting sick of the pointless hate.

      • James Walker says:

I was just as critical when 2.40 was killing PS3s.

      • cult says:

propaganda? Riiight… I own all 3 of the current consoles and have only had endless problems with my 360. It seems that only 2% of microsoft’s tech support has any idea what they are doing. Everyone is saying that tech support told them there will be an update within 48-72 hours for the audio issues, but as of 11:00pm central time, they told me the only solution is to send in my console. I demanded a manager, and now have been on hold for about 20 minutes and counting. That’s 2 hours spent on the phone with them over this issue, and still no resolution.

      • A says:

hehe. my friend’s xbox redringed yesterday, in its first use since downloading the NXE. He’s not happy. In fact, he sent me this post to gripe. it runs fine on mine, but i believe NXE redrings others.

    4. NutMan says:

You know that 3 out of the 4 xbox forum posts you linked to don’t even mention the NXE as the supposed cause of the failure. In fact one of them says that he didn’t get to download the update as it RROD’d right when he turned it on.

I’m not one of those guys who’s gonna call you a fanboy or whatever, but the title is extremely misleading.

    5. David Jay says:

So, because a few people report problems it’s a giant buggy mess? What about the millions without problems? Any large system update on ANY platform will have some issues, and this is no different. The NXE is in no way a failure.

    6. HiFimaniac says:

Today I got my first RROD on my 360, after update wos done my Xbox restarded with 3 red lights blinking, no picture. After 2nd restart the RROD gone, the picture came.No problems with games or , freezing or audio. Just issues with some Xbox live/game demos downloads. My 360 is ON 3 hours allready I hope everything is OK with the hardware.
      Also a PS3 owner.

    7. Kilroy434 says:

Well, I downloaded the upgrade. My system froze AFTER the upgrade reported being finished. Upon trying to restart it, I got the three red rings of death. Going to let it sit for a while and see what happens. What do I do if it IS officially dead?? I haven’t had it for three years yet, am I still covered?

    8. TamTam79 says:

Update today, no longer any audio over HDMI, got one red ring and E70…box is ONE WEEK OLD.

    9. aMcMill says:

I picked up Gears of War 2 the day it came out and the “unable to read disc” error would pop up about half an hour into the game each time i played it. This was tolerable during the single player campaign because it saves at such frequent checkpoints but it’s driving me nuts when i play online!! so i exchanged the game today and the new copy has some framerate issues during the opening cut scene, no big deal. i thought i would try installing the game onto the hard drive to solve any problems. after a successful install i took the disc out but it prompted me to put it back in, in order to play the game. and now it won’t read the disc AT ALL. all my other games work fine. even after deleting GOW2 off my hard drive it still won’t read the disc. anybody else have a similar problem?

    10. underoathjoey says:

Actually my xbox got RROD’d today because of it.. I’m sooooooo disappointed because of it too.. I downloaded the update this morning and had to go to school so as soon as I got home I turned on the xbox and started playing it.. I was going through all of the cool new features.. after I thought I had seen enough I popped in Halo 3.. a little message came up from halo 3 that said saving the game to the hard drive could slow things down tramendously and then just as I was about to push “A” to skip the screen went black.. I restarted my xbox and got the RROD.. So I turned it off and was about ready to weep.. I left the console off for a couple of minutes and started it again and then it started like normal and everything seemed to be going fine for about 5 minutes and then it did the exact same thing.. So I disconnected my Xbox and took it out in the garage and blew it out and LOTS of dust came out..
Started it up again and it worked for about 15 minutes this time and I actually got about halfway through a Halo game.. and.. BAM RROD.. sooooooooo BOOO.. As of right now i’m just gonna let my xbox sit for a while seeing as how the longer i left it off the longer it worked.. who knows.. i’m sure its toast but i’m crossin my fingers..

    11. KnocK says:

Just FYI, never had a problem with my 360. I downloaded the NXE this morning, and I am sending my machine to Microsoft tomorrow, and while on the phone with support (this was after the 3 rings of death) I could hear many many people telling their customers the same thing I was hearing. But they still never admitted it. When asked she said, oh no people are just calling because they are excited about the NXE. Hmmm I know when I like a product so much the first thing I do is call support.

I love my 360, also have a ps3 mainly for Blu-Ray. But don’t think this is cooked up by some PS3 fanboy. unfortunatly for some of us, it’s reality. :( Hope to be back in the game in 2 to 4 weeks!

    12. Nathan says:

I’m having the freezing friends list problem in NXE… It’s ridiculously annoying. Hopefully MS will end up fixing this.

    13. todd says:

mine rrod’d too. after the update downloaded, the console rebooted, the it installed the update and rebooted again. the nxe dashboard was loaded for all but 20 seconds. i went to sign in to live and it froze. i rebooted it only to get the rrod.

    14. God says:

How the fuck can it cause a RRoD when that is a hardware failure and this problem is software related.

      • Messy says:

FYI every hardware requires some sort of software to function properly (may it be firmware or any other thing)… hardware cant function on its own nor it has a brain of its own (still 2008 noy 2020)… Software directs and assists the hardware to function correctly… You would know this if you owned a freakin computer… Basic eg Windows (its called an Operating System for a reason!!)

    15. KnocK says:

you’re right, all these RRoD are just happining due to hardware failure and it just so happens a majority of people downloaded the NXE hours before. Case solved.

      • Messy says:

Do you even know to read… people are saying they downloaded the update, after it completed the console restarted, froze and rrod appeared… how the hell does the NXE update takes an hour or more to update… Read before posting BS…

        • KnocK says:

I actually do know how to read, a feat you seem to not be able to handle. I said they downloaded the NXE hours before it just happen to RRoD. This was sarcasam, you inferior dolt. if YOU had read, you would have known that I am having the same RRoD problem, thanks for playing.

    16. Pete says:

When I went to download the NXE this morning, it went smooth and fast. Then when the xbox restarted itself, it came up with a single red ring on the lower right side. Funny thing is that it worked fine. Loaded up like normal when I booted it up for the download.

Also this xbox was just sent to me from ciruit city the first week of November. It’s a factory repaired refurbished unit. It was working perfectly until the update downloaded and rebooted the console 2 weeks after i received it. I called M$ and was that i have to pay the $100 to get it fixed. Screw that.

Oh and get this, when I mentioned that it was an E80 error, the representative sounded very confused and surprised. Almost like he had never heard of it before. Something is definatly going on there.

      • Anson Goldade says:

Almost exact same thing happened to me. Older console that’s never been repaired and never had a lick of trouble with. Started up last night, downloaded update and then after the reboot I get the single flashing light with the E80. And since it’s an older box it’s out of warranty and they want me to pay $100 to fix it … because they pushed a software update. This is total BS.

        • Nitz says:

I’m in the same boat! Never had a bit of problem with this box. And this morning, my girlfriend goes to play mirrors edge, but thinks she’s missing something because she can’t get the xbox to turn on, when in fact, it was red ring’d. It’s not fun to get a text at work about how your xbox just RRoD’d.

I won’t have an opportunity to chit-chat with Microsoft until this evening, but I promise you this; I will not pay $100.00 to get it fixed, if that’s the only solution. Not when it’s due to an update you -forced- me to apply. (If it was my fault, that’s a different story.)

    17. Mike says:

Mine RRoD’ed on me as well. Haven’t had ANY problems in two years of owning this system and it RRoD’ed after several hours. Absolutely disappointed.

    18. Tony says:

No sound through hdmi after update!

    19. dylanevl says:

Score another one for the RROD. I downloaded the update yesterday, copied Fallout 3 to my harddrive. Was playing this morning when it locked up trying to load a level and now I get the red ring when I turn it on.

Coincidence? The box worked perfectly fine until I installed NXE.

    20. dylanevl says:

Oh, and I got the E47 error. The support rep sounded like he got that all the time.

    21. rufiomcml says:

i smell abunch of ps3 fanboys bullshit stories :)

      • Aerialgreen says:

While I agree that might be truth to a degree, mine isn’t fake, I actually saved for a time to get my console and had no problems (not even overheating, my apt is a cold place) until after the upgrade, coincidence? don’t care, I just want my console working as it was before it.

Got a working warranty, thus I’ll be getting a new x360 this next Tuesday (not a refurbished one, the store I bought it is giving me a new one from their stock), and while there is nothing official about NXE messing with the consoles, I’ll be resetting it to the state it was before such upgrade.

      • Brad Johnson says:

I have all three systems, and have only had problems with my xbox (three times sent in for repairs) Now…NO VIDEO! Nice PS3 theory dude…

    22. dylanevl says:

I could only wish mine were a PS3 fanboy story.

    23. Messy says:

Simple and sweet.. The NXE software codes have bugs or it didnt install properly which might be causing all these problems…

    24. Nitz says:

@dylanevl: Oh how I wish mine was a fanboy story :( I doubt fanboys go to post on the xbox tech support forms… that’s a bit far :)

[On an somewhat unrelated note, I do want a PS3.]

    25. dEvA5TaToR says:

First off I don’t own a Playstation3 and no I’m not a troll or anything. After the update everything was working fine I swear i’m telling the truth. I did get some freezing on the friend list that was yesterday. Now today I’m playing GOW2 for a hour now the game froze so i turn it off. Try again same thing happens again after 9 mins of playing time. Try again for the third time after i let it rest for a couple of mins. i get the RROD my name is my gamertag so I’m not making this stuff up. Just look what time I was offline.

    26. beruuu says:

i bought mine this september and it has RROD’d twice so far, both times due to a power cut (though it worked fine after restarting), and both times before NXE. though after installing nxe, the system frequently freezes in the middle of games. CoD4 and GTAIV froze after about 20 mins of play and all demos freeze in less than 5 mins. and it also doesn’t load up the xbox live channels, saying that no content is available. tbh i liked the old dashboard WAY better; easier to navigate and find stuff. and the new dashboard takes a lot of time to load up

    27. Somflyongai says:

Pissed…. I bought my XBOX back in June… Havent had any issues – not a one. The XBOX was always there for me. I did my XBOX update, and was amazed by the beauty of the NXE… I hadnt played a game on it until today – I have been streaming movies to my XBOX from netflix… Yeah Im watching sliders. Anyway, today, I decide to pop in left 4 dead. I get.. maybe an hour of play, then out of nowhere screen goes blank – XBOX displays a half red ring (Two left lights.) So natrally this freaks me out a bit, but I am so shocked, I kinda laugh it off… I turn on the box, and get back into my party, and I laugh it off with my friends… Boom. RROD again.

So I move the box, to a more ventalated, and upright position, hoping to solve the issue. Today – within 48 hours of this update, I have RROD a total of 14 times. I am trying to go and wipe all the XBOX and restore to original factory settings, to reinstall this NXE… I never thought this was going to happen to me – although I feared it would… I was smart enough to invest in a 40 dollar insurance with best buy – which will be paying itself off tomorrow :) .

I think this is just slightly more than a coincidence though… Its definently a NXE issue – and I am afraid to even try to call an XBOX call center right now.. Some people in India are tearing their hair out right now, wishing they could use their College degrees in somewhere else other than a call center.

    28. Ken says:

Well, my original XBox 360 bought in 2006 fried 2 weeks after I bought it. So did the one they sent me refurbished on warranty. that 3rd XBox lasted until yesterday.

Installed NXE Wednesday, got the red ring of death Friday. Won’t go away, even after waiting a few days. I bought a new 360 Arcade and used my old hard drive. I’m sick of refurbished FrankenBoxes, so I hoped this one manufactured August 2008 would work.

It works fine on Fallout 3, though still freezes up every 5 minutes on Fable 2. Haven’t tried any other games yet.

    29. Aerialgreen says:

My story is similar to some of them here: installed NXE on my x360 and 2 minutes into it, went to the friends list to check their avatars and suddenly froze, so I restarted the console, and right then and there graphics went bad and got an “E74″ error message.

No luck in using the self-fix methods for this on their website, at least not for me (our front neighbor got his x360 working back almost a year ago, and following their website instructions), so I called their service for help and file report.

They support people were nice and all (and obviously busy in the background), but at the end I had to send my xbox for repair, an here I am, waiting but REALLY afraid that whatever update is stored on my HDD will f-up my xbox once it gets back.

      • Aerialgreen says:

Got word from the store I bought my xbox, they’ll replace it with one of their stock, but it’ll be by next Tuesday, so I’ll be cautious.

    30. mike says:

got the NXE yesterday, played for an hour, turned it off, and the very next time i turned it on got the rrod.

      • Justin says:

        Exact same here.

Installed NXE (a 2008 model). Everything was fine. Played a bunch that night. Next day, went to open the tray (hadn’t been playing yet): RRoD.

No matter what I tried over the next day I could not get it to start. RRoD every time. Until now not a single issue with this console (my older 2006 model 360 on the other hand…). It’s quiet, isn’t overheating and the optical drive is smooth.

I find it VERY suspicious that I experienced a “general hardware failure” on a 6 month old box the second time I start it after the update.

    31. Rosebud6 says:

I had a RRoD about 1.5 years ago and have been playing this refurb’ed system flawlessly ever since I got it back. Downloaded the NXE update and now it locks up about every 10 min. If I’m lucky I can get about 20min of play before it locks up and I loose the 20min of play…so technically I’ve been playing for 2 days and have done nothing in game, lol. I personally liked the old style better. They should put an option in there to NOT upgrade.

Come on MS, get your stuff together before you send out a patch that was really not needed. Think I might just go get a PS3 and be done with it.

    32. Bug says:

I played it for a day after NXE download too then the next time I turned it on watched a few mins of a netflix tried to return to dashboard then 1/4 rrod – then the regular rrod – now it won’t even power on. :(

    33. ETRUNK says:

PO’D! After the install, i don’t get a video signal thru HDMI. Before the NXE, i did. WTF, mate!?

    34. greg says:

Two machines in 4 days froze and RROD…I am pissed!

    35. paul england uk says:

We have two xbox’s in the house an Elite and an Arcade, you will not believe this! both got red ring of death within one hour of each other, both times playing COD 5 First thing was black dots on screen than restart with red ring of death and error E74!!!! Both machines? still in warranty 11 months old. Microsoft are picking up Arcade for repairs, but for some odd reason the elite serials number is in another persons name and address, so I will now have to prove I have purchased the 360 before they will repair it. Both 360 were working fine until we updated. Microsoft have made a very big mistake.

    36. Steven Shearing says:

Just updated today cold boot i havent played in a week, downloaded new dashboard installed all with in about 2mins.

i pop a game in to play frezze’s 3 red lights, i restart consle and 3 red lights still.

The consle was fine before update.
Just perfect im now consle less, just ran out of warranty aswell.

    37. Insane Blade says:

Installed the update, caused the textures in GoW2 to not load correctly when starting matches, then kept freezing time after time, and now it just gives me the 3/4 RRoD as soon as it is powered on :(
(Note, Xbox Elite bought last september, worked FINE, no problems at all)

    38. JMcDan08 says:

3rd time booting up xbox after updating the NXE. RROD. Dammit, I thought I was in the clear. This xbox elite is only 11 months old. I can’t believe this. What a crock. I’m beginning to doubt Microsoft’s efforts.

    39. Kevin says:

Reboot after NXE install. RROD. System error E71. Microsoft will do nothing about it, want to charge for the repair anyway because my warranty was conveniently up at the end of September. The fact that my system worked perfectly and was turned into a brick by this update doesn’t seem to impress them.

    40. paul england uk says:

still waiting for Microsoft to register my xbox in my name after serial number was put in someone else’s name, emailed them pics of serial number but they seem to be crap at looking at emails. service total rubbish. will have to try to phone again, will not be buying anymore xbox’s this is the third one with red light, problems. wish I had kept play-station 3, it is very well made. \

    41. Sloansta93 says:

I have also been unfortunate. I fixed my Xbox 360, by use of replacing the X-Clamps, and then I updated to NXE and received RROD once again. Much to my despair the Xbox could no longer be revived. I would advise all users who are contemplating updating NXE to wait until a reported bug fix. By the way I have modified my Xbox with iXtreme 1.2 revC, if that is of any relevance.

    42. AZ Wolverine says:

I have three xboxes and I just got the second three ring of death in two weeks. I think it is a NXE problem for sure!

    43. GC CC says:

Right after connecting to Xbox live for the first time and upgrading the console, the display was very fuzzy. Re restarted the unit and were rewarded with the red ring of death and E 74. Luckily we have a Wii too so the kids have something to play. Nice time to not have the 360 through Christmas. I think I will return the 360 games and get Wii games.

    44. Jason Holland says:

Just to add in my $0.02
I had the Falcon Board with HDMI, just received reborn from MS with only 26 days usage. Worked fine with no lockups or anything. I installed the NXE update and within the next hour I was playing Bioshock and the screen showed black lines down the screen. Rebooted and got E74. Did all the standard troubleshooitng and still just one red light.
      This Sux!!!

    45. TL says:

My 360 worked perfectly. I downloaded the NXE, and now it has significant difficulty reading discs. The discs worked fine before the update, and still work fine on other 360s.
I emailed MS about it, and the entire response was telling me the different things that could be wrong with the discs, even though I said they worked on other 360s.
Goddam it MS and your POS update, I just wanted to play some f-ing Rockband!

    46. Brent says:

Yeah I got the RRod about 3 days after NXE update. still waiting on Box to get back. Oh and anyone saying that these are just Sony Fanboys stirring something up, pull your head out of your @ss. If you have that much blind ideaology to MS, that you defend them at every turn, you’re one sorry SOB.

    47. waitnbleed says:

94 percent of red light errors are from over heating, if you have no warranty, just look up how to open your xbox, take off the two x-clamps, maybe apply more thermal paste between the gpu and cpu and place two m5 washers on the bottom of each clip that the x-clamps attach to, this will tighten the bond between the chips and heatsinks, that fixes your heat problem, there is also a penny trick you can do to remove heat from the other 4 processors, dont put the whole thing back together though, remove the fan 3 pin power connector, turn it on with the dvd drive hooked up and let the cpu overheat, kinda like the towel trick but much safer, after two red lights appear, turn off, let sit and restart and good as new, should not get the rrod again.

    48. Madman0311 says:

The NXE wont download for me, so I cant get XBL. HELP!!!

    49. Fuckmicrosoft says:

How about the NXE just looks goddamn gay and juvenile? My jackoff of a friend put his internet updated NXE hard drive into my Xbox, and like a sexually transmitted virus, NXE infected my system and I hate SO much, and now there’s no way to go back. What the hell was Microsoft thinking?? They had a perfectly good interface going with the original, and now they ruined it. Sometimes I wonder if the developers at Microsoft have any common sense at all.

    50. KoRn_ER7 says:

I`m on my 2nd $hitBoX. 1st one (launch 360), died last year right after the NXE update, console restarted with RRoD no picture no sound, Adios!
Before that update it worked perfect, never had any problems!
Last week decidet to buy a new 360 (Jasper) but downloaded the update to USB and then install it.
Works OK for now. (Well it must, the 1st 360 from 2005 lived for 3 years!!! )
But in Display settings when I set to 1080p, the red filer line is visible on my left side of the screen, with 1080i no problems…
Yes I own Full HD TV.
BTW the drive is still soooo loud, the only good thing about NXE is that you can install games to HDD.
What`s next? My PS3 will die too?!
LCD will suffer from more backlight clouding?, and my reciever will be hit by a thunder :-P
From all those update`s, tech problems etc., I just became so pesimistic about everything :-(

    51. DJ DRUMAJOR says:

Bought xbox in 2006 with no problems. I don’t play online and never hooked it up to the internet until April 2009. NoW I see why I never wanted to play online, My XBOX is infected with what ever the problem is when you update the operating system. I guess the Avatar that I created was a Gremlin because it started acting up as soon as I saved it. Microsoft is acting like any big corporation and ignoring the customer. WE SHOULD SHOW THEM THAT WE ARE THE TRUE POWER BEHIND THE COMPANY AND BOYCOTT MICROSOFT PRODUCTS. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER XBOX 360 UNLESS THEY DO A 360 AND TREAT CUSTOMERS WITH RESPECT.

    52. LARN says:

I update my Falcon with this NXE thing, and suddenly my xbox got the first RROD after 5 minutes playing. I already try with other games but got no luck. This is my 2nd xbox360. It’s surely a hardware failure thing, since I think MS selling these hardware failure thing to their customers. Not listed in the package list but it’s on the package. I don’t know maybe the NXE push the hardware capability, so it got overheat too often. Probably MS testing the NXE only on the Jasper version to push their hardware limit. But it will toast the older version. That’s a good thing for MS so the customers will buy the Jasper, but not a good thing for their customers.

    53. Sloppy Joe says:

Welp, I’m screwed. Was playing Red Dead Redemption when all of the sudden the colors on my screen started going off and on. It would get more blue than anything, then go back to normal. Today, was playing, when BAM! No video whatsoever. Turned console off, then on, and my LCD was showing “Not Supported”. Checked all cables, fine. Try another off/on, now “No Signal”. MS wants 100 bucks to fix it. Think I’m gonna try to fix it on my own but DAMN is this annoying. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
