Sith Lord John Riccitiello, in an interview with Financial Times, has made the claim that much like companies like Disney, NBC and CBA, EA will be the video game industry’s “one great company”.
I read a book on how every medium creates one great company: animation created Disney, CBS was created by radio, NBC by television…
Interactive entertainment is going to determine one great company and I think it’s this one. One of the reasons I’ve come back is to try to take it to the next step.
FIrst of all, let me be very clear: I don’t like John Riccitiello. He seems like an oil salesman, or a lawyer. A generally unlikable individual. With that said, the idea of EA becoming the NBC of gaming seems, at the very least, plausible. However, Riccitiello did make one final comment that is sure to rub a lot of anti-EA people the wrong way.
Above all, I’m trying to bring great quality and innovation back… I’m also trying to drive us towards a variety of new business models, whether it be subscription or micro-transactions, or advertising-based.
Quality, maybe. I’ll give you quality, if only because I genuinely liked Army of Two/i>. But innovation? I’m sorry, but something is only “innovative” if it works.
