Though the company itself has recently had it’s share of sad times, it had yet to have an impact of this nature on the employees until now. Announced today is the closing of Midway’s Austin studio, which housed 45 people. To add to that number, a whopping 130 are given their pink slips from their Chicago studio.

CEO of Midway, Matt Brooty said on the issue:

“The cost-reduction measures are vital for us to rationalize our operations and provide the resources necessary for our core properties to succeed”

It is not currently known what specific non “core” titles/properties are being affected, so my guess is as good as yours to see if we will ever get a glance of that game that is supposed to look better than Gears 2.

How can Midway be saved? XBLA/PSN NBA Jam HD Remix (seriously!), a new Crusi’n game for Wii, and a public apology for Mortal Kombat vs DC (and that Revolution X arcade game from way back, which is no doubt indirectly related to people thinking that Guitar Hero: Aerosmith was a good idea).
