Sony Computer Entertainment Studio’s president Phil Harrison, one of the fathers of the original PlayStation, as well as the PS2, PSP and PS3, has announced that he is resigning from Sony, effective February 29th.
Once Harrison leaves, his role at Sony will be filled by current President and Group CEO of SCEI, Kaz Hirai.
As one of the founding members of SCE, Phil played a key role in the development and growth of the PlayStation business and our industry. It is sad to see him departing from SCE, but I wish to express my gratitude for his many invaluable contributions and also wish Phil the very best of luck in his future endeavous.
Harrison was equally sentimental.
The past fifteen years at Sony Computer Entertainment has been the defining journey of my life so far. I am grateful to all the PlayStation family for their incredible support, guidance and friendship. It has been a privilege to serve as part of the team and be inspired by them on a daily basis. I am so proud of everything PlayStation has achieved and will continue to support it’s future in every way I can.
As someone who covered the Xbox 360 exclusively for nearly a year, this brings back memories of when Peter Moore left Microsoft. There were actually Xbox 360 fanboys who cried when he left (pathetic). I’m not saying that the same will happen with Harrison’s departure, but you have to think the Sony nation will sorely miss him.
