Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, the head of Sony Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, said that neither himself or Sony considers the Nintendo DS to be a direct competitor to the PSP, dispite the fact that, you know, they’re both handheld gaming systems.
We’ve always thought that the PSP as a platform is standing on its own – there’s no direct competition. Some people think that the DS is its rival simply because it’s portable, but the positioning and the main user base are totally different.
Yoshida went on to say that, to Sony, it’s a matter of showing the consumers what the platform can truly deliver, not just with video games, but with its many other uses. Like running NES emulators. Yoshida then admitted that there have been problems with the platform in regards to the lack of third-party software, but he didn’t seem too worried as he chalked it up to the growing video game market. However, Yoshida says that when it is all said and done, developers will come back to the PSP.
But when they really focus on what they can do with the platform, there are still lots of good business opportunities that are still viable, and will continue to be, because there are no competing platforms.
…besides the Nintendo DS, again, but whatever.
