Xbox 360 NXE Hard Drive Install Chart (UPDATED)

UPDATE COMING VERY SOON, It’s April 6th right now and I haven’t updated since January 14th, 2009!! A lot of games have come out since then + the announcement of a USB drive working with the Xbox 360, means I’m going to be busy this weekend to make sure you all have the most up to date information. For now, leave a comment if there is a specific game you were looking for a size and I’ll see what I can do ;)

If you have anything to add (any missing game, size, differences), just throw a comment. The general rule of thumb with the list, is if you have 120GB, install many games except of course for Halo 3 (the only game that actually runs slower). While it is true some games you will notice very little difference in any load times, but just think of how quiet you can make your 360 as well as save yourself from opitical disc errors (I have personally had to return a 360 because of this).

Rather than put credits at the bottom of this, I want to give full thanks right here at the top to:
Spidey987 at The AVForums
SynGamer at CheapAssGamer
Sean at NeoGAF and any gamers in those threads who helped contribute information.

Double shoutout to SynGamer at CheapAssGamer, he color coded his list and had a crapload of imported games that I have added to this list (even changing the colors of the list to aid a color blind reader.. I shit you not).

All I did here was put their collected information chart form. I will update as much as possible, drop a comment if you know how much time is saved on a particular game (where the “xxx”‘s are marked).

I don’t think the chart needs to be explained, you have the games, you have how much space they would take on your hard drive, and then how much time you’d be saving (not listed on the chart is how much relief you will be giving your poor disc drive). No longer do 360 fanboys have the fodder of “oh you PS3 people have to install games blah blah” .. in the end, if you have a big enough hard drive, you know you’ll be installing these games soon enough.

Related link: Install a non-Microsoft brand hard drive for your 360 so you don’t have to pay their high prices, do this at your own discretion of course.

About the games that aren’t supported. Theories are that the Burger King games were made for Xbox 1 and emulated to play on the 360 and Crackdown is a no go because of the Halo 3 Beta being on the disc. These are just theories though.

Also, if you didn’t know, you MUST have the disc in the tray to play the games off the hard drive.

41 Responses to “Xbox 360 NXE Hard Drive Install Chart (UPDATED)”

  1. candido mendez says:

i was just wondering, the NXE will let you download your game to your hard drive, will this let you play the game without having to insert the disc???

    • Devil Dan says:

No. Because then you culd just install and resell. It’s like PC games, where often the whole game installs to the HDD but still requires the disc.

  2. Ivo says:

Yes you’ll need the disk in the tray if you want to play.

  3. xino says:

Here’s one for you to add to the list:

Marvel Ultimate Alliance: Loading (comic) screen is faster, about 7sec.

  4. Syn says:

Thanks for giving credit. Not many people would have :)

  5. tan says:

could you see how fast/slow the guitar hero world tour load times are please?

  6. CyberKnight says:

About Crackdown, the Halo 3 beta wasn’t on the disc; it was a download. A long, painful download that had to be done in-game, not from the dashboard and therefore couldn’t be backgrounded. (Ah, the good ol’ days of watching progress bars.)

Not sure why it wouldn’t be supported then, though. :? It’s a shame, too; that game has a really long load time.

Is it true that Backwards Compatible games aren’t supported at all either? My kids still play a lot of the old games like they’re going out of style…

    • Syn says:

Xbox 1 games are indeed not supported, unfortunately. I’m hoping to find a few people to try installing Crackdown again. I’m hoping that perhaps it was just a bad disc…

  7. drewtlo says:

Just curious, does this feature work with backward compatible titles or just 360 titles?
    Thanks

  8. drewtlo says:

Sorry, I just saw the comments above. That’s what I get for posting from a blackberry :(

  9. Spanzley says:

How does it help with heat? This is my main deal-breaker. If running directly from the hard drive, this should cut down on a lot of heat, correct?

    • lockload says:

Well the drive is not spinning so that will generate less heat (but more importantly less noise)

      • Dragon says:

how would the HDD running constantly instead of an optical drive spinning cut any heat down? all it’ll do is move the heat from being IN the 360 case to being in the HDD case on top of the 360…..also, I have a feeling that the only people doing these installs will be the people with 120GB drives since games like RB2 already demolish a 20GB if you’re a DLC hound like most of us that play are…..

        • fileman44 says:

Hard drive runs much more efficient than CD drive, it would make sense that there would be at least a small reduction of heat.

        • John Merson says:

I would say the heat is less but it is minimal. HDD will produce MUCH less heat then a CD drive. However the head from a CD is minimal anyhow.

I would look into upgrading your 360 HDD with a solid state drive, theres no moving parts and it runs MUCH quicker… I would not be suprised if it cut the load times down by 15 to 20 percent is more games.

No the solid states are not a MS product. I can’t wait until I get NXE to try it out…

  10. muffin says:

you are correct, spanzley. the overall reliability of your 360 will greatly increase with the hd install. less heat, less disc spinning, less noise

  11. I just timed a few of my games, and these are the results I got

    Forza 2 – Nürburgring
Disc: 31 sec HDD: 20 sec

Project Gotham Racing 3 – Nürburgring – Behemoth Circuit
Disc: 27 sec HDD: 14 sec

Perfect Dark Zero – Mission 01
Disc: 30 sec HDD: 16 sec

  12. Dragon says:

so, how’re you guys getting the NXE download to be able to test this?

  13. I got an early access invite from Microsoft, and I’d imagine these other people did as well, that, or they have the leaked version floating around

  14. that guy says:

I downloaded the NXE from a friend apparently he put his on a thumb drive and it works, Dead SPace lag times were cut down in half for me and it even doubled the render for facial features. I’ve yet to try out Mass effect and some others but besides that its great.

  15. DJEVOLVE says:

SOUNDS GOOD TO ME. THANKS, I WAS GOING TO ASK A QUESTION BUT SEEMS YOU HAVE ANSWERED EVERYTHING I NEEDED TO KNOW.

  16. Halwende says:

Burnout Paradise: 36 sec initial load (DVD) and 28 sec (HDD)

  17. 1031982 says:

Just did Saints Row 2 :
    Initial load
    Disk : 13 seconds HDD : 7 seconds
    Loading my game
    Disk : 12 seconds HDD : 19 seconds

    • Tubebaum says:

Why did “loading your game” take longer using the HDD? Isn’t the whole point that it drops loading time? ._.

  18. RickAT says:

How long does it take me to install a game on the hard drive?

  19. squall82 says:

u are all stupid fella,ps3 has done it all before you doing it…

    • Morden says:

There is a big difference between an “optional” install for performance and “you can’t play this game without losing 10 Gb of HDD space”.

MS went with the first, Sony went with the second, so no, not the same thing at all fanboy.

  20. Sim31 says:

The force unleashed is listed on there 2 times?

    • Sizzle says:

squall82 if the ps3 is so godly why aren’t you playing it? exactly…

Keep up the good work guys, I would contribute my fat stack of games and their time saved.. but.. I signed-up for both NXE’s never heard back from xbox.

  21. ToastedSoul says:

    Lego Indiana Jones:
Starting the game / Loading a level: it’s about 5 seconds faster from the HDD

  22. Dave says:

    how about perfect dark zero?

  23. dzedi says:

I have mass effect(asian version) installed on my 20GB hdd(21.11.2006) and I still have loading text sometimes. Especially when I move around the wards(flux in/out) but menus are noticeably quicker in response.

  24. Halwende says:

    Here’s a few more…

GRID – load to title: 19 sec (DVD), 16 sec (HDD)

Burnout Revenge – load to title: 12 sec (DVD), 8 sec (HDD). Loading event: 21 sec (DVD), 10 sec (HDD)

The Darkness – load to title: 21 sec (DVD), 10 sec (HDD). Loading saved game: 21 sec (DVD), 15 sec (HDD)

  25. sickness says:

If you look in Octobers issue of PC World on page 109 you will find a cheap way of upgrading from 20gb to 120gb for 50.00.
