Sessler’s Soapbox: Innovation vs. Numeration

This week Our Lord Sessler speaks absolute truth when he says that video game reviews are not always easy. After reading a blog entry on the Guardian UK website, Adam talks about how video games are harder to review than, say, movies or music and how objectivity is often times lost when you are talking about an interactive experience.

And then he says the single truest thing I’ve ever heard a fellow game reviewer say: Numbered Review Scores are inherently flawed!

The man is absolutely right. We all know that the majority of you guys skim through the review and only pay attention to the score — hell, even I do it sometimes. The only reviews that most people bother to actually read tend to be reviews that are universally negative (i.e. Turning Point: Fall of Liberty).

The numerical score, no matter how precise the number, will never fully capture how the review feels about the game. So do the right thing — read (or watch) the reviews for yourself.
