File this one under ‘Duh’: Michael Pachter expects the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV to far outsell the PS3 counterpart. This is on top of earlier statements from Pachter in which he said he believed that GTA IV will sell somewhere over nine million units.
According to Pachter, out of the predicted nine million units, 6 million will go to the Xbox 360 while 3 million will go to the PS3. A margin of two-to-one.
While I respect Pachter and what he does (all comparisons to Mel Kiper aside), this really isn’t shocking news. In the US alone, the Xbox 360 has an install base nearly four-times larger than the PS3 so to say that any cross-platform game will do better on the Xbox 360 is akin to saying the sky is blue.
Besides, Microsoft needs GTA IV to be a smashing success on the 360. Considering the price they spent for the exclusive rights to episodic content, at least half of all GTA IV on 360 owners would have to buy the extra content. When you consider that we’ll probably see all this content in some kind of “special edition” down the road, I’m skeptical towards buying it at all.
Grand Theft Auto IV will be released on April 29th and will surely give the internet a well-deserved rest for a day or two.

I appreciate your civility. I merely said that the game would sell 9 million by October 31 (Take-Two’s fiscal year), and provided the split (approximately 6 million on the 360 and approximately 3 million on the PS3). The comment was in a note about the likely contribution from GTA to Take-Two’s revenues this year, and wasn’t intended to be a “prediction” that the 360 version would sell more. If there is a prediction in there, it’s 9 million units in the first 6 months.
Thaks again for not being a hater.
