Guys suck something fierce at most videogames, I find. I have the same problems as you, but usually I end up with the upperhand by epically smoking them. If they really get on your nerves in team-play, you can also piss them off real good by failing miserably on purpose and killing yourself/your team mates a lot.

You’re remarks are quite foolish in trying to pigeonhole some of the posters here as being like emotionally stunted zombies. Sexual harassment and racism can generally be handled ok in a work environment because there are policies and procedures. When outside the work environment it is very difficult to ‘police’ (control) racist behavior towards other people.
Your perfect world scenario of everyone being nice to everyone during online play (with microphone) is not likely to come into fruition. (Even if that is what we should be striving for)
When it is all said and done what are your options? (I can think of at least 3):
1. Do nothing about racism and guys picking on girls etc and play online–get all crappy and upset when you play games
2. Do nothing about racism and guys picking on girls etc and play online–know what to expect when you go online and try to make the best of the situation (sometimes people do just play the game for what it is)
3. Quit gaming online–Not going to run into any problems with this option but you miss out on the benefits of going online and playing against people.
So the “Just deal with it†comments are in the end the best way to handle this situation when it is all said and done. Jumping up and down and crying about it not being ‘perfect’ and ‘justice’ etc will get you nowhere. Life is screwed up and we need to learn how to deal with problems.
If you get offended at a racist remark or sexism or whatever, then you just let the person doing the insulting win. They won because you got ‘hurt’ over their comments or whatever they said. For me, racism is such garbage that I would be a stupid moron to take offence at anyone who calls me something. In the end it is YOU who determines what things MEAN for YOU….do you understand?

Such is life with anonymity. People are free to act however they like, and in many cases they think it’s hilarious to act like total idiots and jerks. It’s an unfortunate situation but, as many of the comments show, no amount of rational talk is going to put an end to it, someone will always think it’s amusing to respond in a misogynist manner, that or they think it makes them more of a man.
Trust me when I say this, those people are not the majority of us guy gamers, they’re very much the minority. However they irritate us so much that we leave our mics off as well. There is jerks like that in every game, it unfortunately comes with the territory of playing video games online. The ages of the people playing too is part of the problem, a lot of young kids playing that think crap like that it funny. Although there are players that are older and act like that, it is mainly younger kids who if in the real world talked like that to a women would get their asses handed to the by that women. My suggestion is to ignore them, but if the really piss you off, kick their ass in the game over and over again.
Although this may sound like the snide response of the average mail prick, I am genuinely curious, what if a guy hits on you jokingly, where sex is not brought up, but more for the humor of any sort of contextual relevance to the game.
What I mean is, being exceptionally crude comes with the anonymity of the intarw3b, it makes most guys fuck-heads. But I can imagine a fairly intellectual person also acting like a fuck-head of sorts? Have you ever been amused by the way a guy goes about hitting on you? I agree with you. Sadly, most guy gamers are fucking stupid, especially the ones who play halo. I’ve met a few girls playing various games (mostly FPSs, I don’t play much else online) and other guys always try to but in and get an e-girlfriend or something. They seem quite pathetic to me. Sad but true. However, I don’t think this is going to change anytime soon. I thought the “gamer zone” feature of Xbox Live would work, but it really doesn’t.
I am not a girl, but I have seen this kind of thing happen on Xbox Live. I remember seeing Miss Xena one time in Halo 2 and guys would not shut up trying to hook up with her. I thought it was funny, but I can see how it would get old and annoying very fast. The girl was a good player, I must say and it’s too bad the immature kids in Xbox Live discourage girl gamers from playing.
There should be a way of enforcing or regulating gamer zones, and perhaps it would be a good idea to add a new zone like “25 and over” because I also get tired of muting racist and overall immature kids. The feedback system should allow us to provide gamer reviews based on gamerzones so we don’t get matched against people we would rather avoid.
I don’t know how this is going to help with girls getting hit on by guys. I guess all you can really do is to make sure your friends list contains only people you enjoy playing with and mute unfriendly voices.
Sorry, but there’s no stopping stupidity. I quit Xbox live 3 years ago because it’s not worth my time and energy to get pissed off about people being dumb on XBL (which is about 88% of the time). It totally ruins the experience, and even when I was playing with friends, just having one random person on the team was sometimes enough to destroy what could have been something fun.
I couldn’t even give the rest of the time I had on the subscription to my little sister, because they were giving her the same treatment they were giving you, but she happened to be 11 years old at the time.
So anyway, the moral of the story is that you’re not going to change anything from the position you’re in. You can either go work at Microsoft until you’re in an administrative position over Xbox Live, or you can find some other way to occupy your time. That’s the way it is.

I’ve always loved computers, I’ve always loved video games and in fact I spent a number of years in the game industry. I don’t bother with voice on Xbox at all, the player base is generally too young and hasn’t gotten out of the gender-role separation phase of childhood development. If I want to play for strategy and tactics I use the PC with a Vent or TS server or a game that supports voice, a mature player base and a select group of friends. I do play a lot of MMOs as well, and the way I handle the “OMG A GIRL” folks is one of two ways, depending on what exactly they’re saying:
1) No, I’m a guy.
2) Overload them with detail. Age will usually get them to stop since I’m generally decades older, if not then marital status and the fact that my husband plays too as a (insert uber-bullshit here) and that I’m reading all this out to him right at that moment and hey look, he’s logging in…
Then I follow up and use the block/ignore function if I feel like it. It is after all a game, I’m playing it to have fun and I don’t care enough to waste my time dealing with the asshats.
I sometimes had the same problems when playing EQ and WoW, even when I wasn’t using Ventrilo. Although, I have to say, it is kind of nice having people do stuff for you and give you money in game just because you’re a girl. If they’re gonna be generous, I can’t turn ‘em down!

In game, I shoot red names and protect blue names. If you want to impress a girl gamer, be a good teammate and adversary. That means not giving them special treatment.
I will confess: I check the location of girl gamers on XBL. But if they don’t live anywhere near me, I don’t bug them. If they do, I send an add request. The mic is not the place, nor is during a match the time for that stuff.
