Nintendo has announced that they’ll be sponsoring official world-wide Mario Kart Wii tournaments. The first starts today on the Mario Kart channel. While the rules will change every time, this week, the top prize will go to the player who gets the fastest time. Watch out for special twists on the race made specifically for the tournament!

This is a great idea, in my opinion. It’s promoting the game, which has been overshadowed by Grand Theft Auto IV (and that’s an understatement). In addition, it is a good way to get more people playing online.

To me, this idea of achieving the highest score is what Nintendo is all about – classic arcade-style pride over your ranking on the list.
