ButtonMasher has an upcoming podcast containing an interview with a producer on Mirror’s Edge. A little tidbit from the interview has been posted on how we will be experiencing the game:
This little bit of new information has set gamers on message boards on fire with new hatred for the game, keyboards being smashed, pre-orders canceled all around. In all seriousness, we have all grown accustomed to seeing a story unfold within a game from our character’s perspective (Battlefield Bad Company, Bioshock, etc), so I see how a change from seeing something as awesome as this…
..to find that the cut scenes might end up all looking like this…
.. might throw you off a bit. Even I can’t deny the art style isn’t my cup of tea (comparisons to the Esurance ads are harsh, but not unjust), however I do think the end product might benefit from this change up in perspective. I think of Kill Bill and the scene when O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu) is given her intro scene, how it switched to cartoon showing camera switches and angles that wouldn’t exist if they left it with real life cameras (or we would have ended up with one hell of a cgi’d up Kill Bill). Also were certain graphic themes that might have been “too much” for some viewers if left with the real life actors.
Who knows how graphic DICE will be making this game, but I do know that changing up things isn’t always a bad thing and maybe it is a little too early to give up hope on one of the best looking first person adventure games to come this year. Keep an eye out on ButtonMasher for the full podcast.
