Microsoft Makes LIVE Free!

At their Gamefest 2008 conference out in sunny Seattle, Washington, Microsoft announced that they are removing all subscription fees from their LIVE services… heh… okay, so what if it’s Games for Windows LIVE and not Xbox LIVE?!

Microsoft has announced that Games for Windows LIVE will soon be free for all nine of you who currently use the PC gaming service. GfW LIVE (that’s an attractive acronym, isn’t it?) will also receive a makeover and a completely redesigned user interface.

Microsoft also announced that they will soon be introducing a new Games for Windows marketplace that will work much like their current Xbox LIVE Marketplace. Their marketplace, again like Xbox LIVE, will offer new demos and trailers, and Microsoft will leave the decision of whether or not to charge us up to the developers.

“We have a new UI that’s consistent with the way Windows gamers want to interact,” said Microsoft’s Entertainment Business Division CTO Chris Satchell. “It’s free to you as a developer, and we’re reducing the technical requirements.”

Satchell continued, adding that he feels that Games for Windows LIVE is “going to take off”. Now that it’s free, it just might.

I guess that’s what happens when you’re pay for play service fails. If we all gave up paying for Live on the 360, the same thing would happen.
