In the latest issue of Game Informer, which I have yet to receive, a piece on their “Loose Talk” section discusses Nintendo giving the big ol’ one-finger salute to third party developers by not telling them about their Wii Motion Plus attachment. Specifically, it mentions LucasArts and how they’re not exactly skipping with joy over the fact that Nintendo didn’t bother to tell them that they were working on the Wii Motion Plus.
You know, because a peripheral like that would’ve been absolutely useless to a developer that is working on a game called Star Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels, right?
Nintendo has always been known to be almost antagonistic towards third party publishers, and from what we heard at E, things haven’t changed. Every developer and publisher we talked to said they hadn’t heard about the Wii Motion Plus until the actual press conference. That’s not a good start if you’re trying to get third parties on board with developing for the peripheral and therefore convincing customers that it’s worth their while. LucasArts in particular wasn’t happy at being kept in the dark – especially since it created Star Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels specifically for the console. The game was even included in Nintendo’s press conference, the setting in which the Wii Motion Plus was introduced – which the game doesn’t use, much to LucasArts’ dismay. If this is Nintendo’s attitude regarding it’s new peripheral and third party adoption don’t expect Wii Motion Plus to be adopted by many.
Of course such sentiment is unlikely to be expressed publicly (even though that didn’t stop us from asking LucasArts to comment), however you can’t really blame them for being pretty pissed off. After all, we (the people) have only been asking for a lightsaber game since the Wii freaking launched, but hey… what do we know, right?
