MDK. Earthworm Jim. Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance. Three franchises so incredibly chock full o’ cool that you almost forget that 90% of Interplay’s library was utter crap. However, after a hiatus from the game developing scene (due to, you know, running out of money) it seems that Interplay is getting ready to reclaim their rightful place as a second-tier developer.
Okay, I’m giving Interplay a bit of a hard time. In their prime they did have Fallout, Descent (Freespace), MDK, Baldur’s Gate, Earthworm Jim, Starfleet Command, Bard’s Tale, Alone in the Dark and Carmageddon. But while these games were more than good — some of them being amongst the greatest games of all time, their library does consist primarilly of trash.
It’ll be interesting to see what Interplay will have to offer in the future, and it’ll also be interesting to see if they’ll be bringing back any of their top franchises.
