GTA IV Rated M for “Partial Nudity” – A GTA First

gta-iv-rated-m.jpg

If it surprises you that Grand Theft Auto 4 would receive a rating of M for Mature, you’re a moron. Every GTA release has received an M rating*, usually for strong language and animated violence. However, with the impending release of GTA IV and what will surely be the shitstorm that will follow, it’s always important to know why a game is rated what it is rated.

So what has earned GTA IV it’s M Rating?

  • Intense Violence
  • Blood
  • Strong Language
  • Strong Sexual Content
  • Partial Nudity
  • Use of Drugs and Alcohol
  • Partial Nudity? …that’s a new one. I do have to commend Rockstar Games for continuing to push the envelope of what is acceptable in video games with the GTA franchise. While other franchises try to grow more family friendly (Read: Live Free or Die Hard), GTA continues to be a den of sin — and I don’t think we’d have it any other way.

*UPDATE: Grand Theft Auto 2 for Game Boy Color and PSOne was rated T (thanks NutMan)

Actually GTA advance did have an M rating. GTA 2 also had an M for the PC and dreamcast versions. The gameboy color and PS1 versions received a T.
