Have you been one of the no fewer than eight people who have been waiting for Grand Theft Auto IV to make its long-awaited PC debut? Well… sucks to be you right about now, doesn’t it?
If you haven’t heard, the PC port of GTA IV is little more than a giant clusterfuck of a mess with users reporting everything from the game crashing at random times to the inability to play multiplayer games to, as was the case with Shacknews editor and 1997 Spokane Powerlifting Silver Medalist (190kg)* Steve Gibson, the game simply wouldn’t boot.
Ruh roh, as a famous four-legged detective would say.
Players have begun to compile a list of potential fixes for the various problems on the Steam message boards, and so far there has been mixed results with some users saying “zomg thanks!” and others saying “zomg u r teh liarz!”, however the general consensus is that the fixes do work if you know what you’re doing.
One of the issues that doesn’t seem to be fixing with these work-arounds in the issue of missing textures. While this has been attributed to corrupted video card drivers, several users who have reinstalled their drivers are reporting that it hasn’t changed a damn thing.
I would pick up the game and test it for myself to give you guys a report on what the deal is, but… no. I’m not spending $50 for a game everybody says is broken. Nor should you — not until Rockstar fixes this, anyways. Which I’m sure they will, to be honest. They seem to be really good with this sort of thing.
*Not really. At least, we don’t think
