GameStop Sees Record Quarter; Murder Simulators to Blame

Gaming retailer GameStop, whom I despise with the intensity of one thousand suns, saw record profit in Q2, 2008. In fact, they saw their net earnings jump up 162%, to $57.2 million. For the three month period from June-August, GameStop saw total sales rise another 35% to $1.8 billion.

With a ‘B’.

So what were the games spearheading the sales increase? The list won’t surprise you:

  • Grand Theft Auto IV
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
  • NCAA Football 09
  • Wii Fit
  • Battlefield: Bad Company
  • As you could have probably figured out, with games like LittleBigPlanet, Spore, Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Gears of War 2 due by the end of the fiscal year, GameStop is looking to have an even better second half.
