GamePro is at it again, trying to beat SPOnG as the worst source of gaming information. Their latest screw up comes from a new feature put up, “PS3 vs. Xbox 360 ports: The cold, hard truth.” I think as you read on, you’ll find it is “Sony gave us money to write this” would have been a more suitable title.
Starting off is Assassin’s Creed, where the Xbox 360 version is given the nod as the superior version, however their summary would leave you wondering otherwise, “The Xbox 360 isn’t the ideal option for controls given better button mapping on the Sixaxis” and “the PlayStation 3 version plays beautifully now thanks to a crucial patch.” Basically everything they had said negatively about the PS3 version is all better now.
The next two titles, PS3’s Burnout Paradise and Call of Duty 4 are given the ‘edge’ over the 360 version for a reason that is completely false, GamePro states that they both have multiplayer that runs on dedicated servers. Not only is this further from the truth, but has even been debunked by programmer Calen of Infinity Ward:
“We do not have dedicated, hosted, no-client servers on PS3 or 360. The PC game comes with a dedicated server executable for people to run if they want to set up a dedicated server, but the console game does not.”
Though there is a few games that use dedicated servers on the PS3, they are just that, a few, and that is not including Burnout Paradise or CoD4 unfortunately. Their last amusing choice for a PS3 superior title is, Devil May Cry 4. I can see their choosing the Sixaxis as the better controller to play the game on because of DMC’s existence being on Sony consoles, however in the end that is really preference of the player. They do note the negative forced 20+ minute 5gb install with the PS3 version (Note: by Capcom, not Sony’s fault), which GamePro makes mention of, yet still claims that the PS3 has the upper hand.
At the least, if you check the article for yourself, you can see that GamePro has really hit their target demographic with the second comment on the page being..”YEAH GO PS3 DIE GAY360.” Good times.
Popularity: unranked [?]

Well, it’s funny that YOU decide not to mention that due to the 20+ minute initial installation, DMC4 reduces all in-game load time by about half on the PS3 version.
Also, their conclusion that Burnout and COD4 are on dedicated servers was from their experiences playing online (they note that you get into games faster on COD4 and get into events faster on Burnout with the PS3). Reduced lag is still reduced lag, whatever the reason. Maybe the PS3’s ethernet/wireless hardware superior. Or, perhaps, Xbox Live’s many features congests bandwidth. Maybe the lags were just coincidental.
Finally, citing one bad comment from an anti-360 kid isn’t fair when there are good amount of bad comments from anti-PS3 kids there too (really, too many on both sides).
You seem a bit biased yourself seeing as how your writing is almost an obvious attempt at the “spinning” of information (with your clever omissions and all).
Just for the record, I do support the PS3 (and maybe the 360 if I have money to spare), but I’m a big fan of reasoning as well.
Please, allow me to retort.
On DMC4 installation time being knocked out by half, it isn’t mentioned, because half of two to three seconds is a second to a second and a half.. this isn’t worth the 22 minute install time that is not optional.
They have this image up for their CoD4 page http://www.gamepro.com/microsoft/xbox360/games/features/images/164668-6-1.jpg as though not only do they state (not presume or allude) that it is peer to peer, but they have a nifty diagram to ‘prove’ it, yet, the PS3 version is the same as the 360 version in the network connections regards. Further down then even re-state “Stable, dedicated servers are preferable to peer-to-peer networking any day of the week.”
This was written not to “spin” anything, only showing the other side, which would be an obvious 360 bias, otherwise it wouldn’t be the flip side to their article, no? When their article showing which versions of games you should be buying, it should not come down to the writers controller preference, that is just crazy and non-factual.
Uh, 2-3 seconds in the 360 version of DMC4? No, I don’t think so — It’s longer than that on the PS3, and like twice that on the 360.
Ya know, Gamepro has really been laying it on thick in favor of the PS3 for quite some time, and in the process always manage to get some crucial bit of information totally wrong , . . all while causing a near riot with the 14 year old reader responses. I commented on that article, as I do every time “Blake Snow” and company go on a Anti-360 rant…..This has become much more apparent to me since the whole Kane & Lynch fiasco over at Gamespot. Now, paying for Kudos, strokes and complements is bad enough and it’s completely gotten out of control, down to the stupid fn vgchartz and nextgenwars phony number scams, but doing this AND trashing the opponent is just unforgivable……I was a die-hard PS2 guy, I just loved it, so when I got my PS3 at launch I expected a lot of the same, . . . right. A year later, I bought a X360 & a Wii within the same month, and have never looked back. So I do own all 3 consoles and like them all, but at this point prefer the 360 because of LIVE content, game selection and ease of use, which of coarse is all subjective and very (personal) ….As far as hardware is concerned, I have NEVER had a problem with my 360 or Wii, . . my PS3 on the other hand has been plagued with freezing issues and random and frequent controller disconnects, which also contributed to me buying the other two….
So please, . . thank you for sharing this story and reporting unfairness when you see it, . this whole divide and conquer thing in the community must stop, and be replaced with honest journalism. Thanks again.
First, the “paid by Sony” mention is obviously a jab at an article that you didn’t like, also as an obvious Xbox fan.
All you could fault them for was to like the improvement made to a game by a patch, assuming (apparently wrongly) that a dedicated online server was used because of a great online experience (you will notice that the fact that their assumption seem wrong does not change the reason they had that assumption in the first place), and for liking cutting down load times (while they do note the pendant which is the one time 20mn install)…
Oh .. and mocking them because of -1- stupid fanboy posting?
Come on now… we all know there is more than enough rabid Xbox fanboys posting around stupid things on forums as well…
I think you need more hugs
Now, as per James, come on man.
Bringing up that -you- never had a reliability problem with your Xbox vs your PS3 is just asking to be beat with the proverbial stick.
The reports of defective Xbox 360s (famous RROD) are legion, while the PS3 is constantly lauded for its stability. If you want to look for a fight with the PS3, this ain’t it.

Game lineup ? sure. It’s coming, but with a year head start the Xbox naturally shines there.
What we’re fed up with are the shaddy ports on PS3. Hopefully more competition coming Q3-Q4 2008 will remedy this.
I said it before, but I’ll say it again, this post was because the article was written not just in retaliation of GamePro’s pro-PS3 stance, but because it ignored facts to try and make points in the system’s favor. The bias against the 360 in it was so strong that there needed to be something written as an addendum to what GamePro had wrote.
I am a Nintendo fan boy btw.
I agree with your sentiments about the PS3 having a bad port problem, and I definitely see this year helping change that image. I hope so at least, I want to buy a PS3 myself, but there is few reasons to take the plunge just yet (it’ll take more than one game, MGS4, to get me to spend $400).
“Though there is a few games that use dedicated servers on the PS3, they are just that, a few, and that is not including Burnout Paradise or CoD4 unfortunately.”
Yep – multiplatforms on either 360 or PS3 dont use dedicated. COD4 / COD5 fit into this.
The thing is, your paying money to MS for xbox live so you can play on another persons xbox. Total con if you ask me. I know your going to say its not that much money – but its the principle.
Resistance 1 / 2 , MGS4 and Killzone2 and many other gamesall have dedicated servers for FREE on the PSN.
