Alex St. John, the douchy former spyware-peddler WildTangent CEO (now President) with a name fit for porn, has once again expressed his views that video game consoles are on the way out, and that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are the last consoles we will see out of either Microsoft or Sony.
I will now give you all a few moments to laugh.
Got that out of your systems? Awesome. Now here is what St. John’s Wart had to say about the future of console gaming — or lack thereof:
I think you’re looking at the last generation of consoles. I don’t think Sony or Microsoft is going to make another console. The problem is that great graphics, which is what used to differentiate a console, are a commodity. Everybody’s got it. You can’t buy a PC that doesn’t have Xbox or Nintendo-quality graphics anymore.
St. John went on to point out that World of Warcraft made more money in 2007 than every game sold on the Xbox 360. This naturally proves once and for all that consoles are dead, right?!
No.
It’s obvious that the console market is far from perfect, but they (consoles) have one advantage that PC games will never, every have: Convenience. Most people, not just the hardcore but the casual gamer as well, will always prefer consoles to PC gaming because, frankly, it’s easier. You don’t have to worry about minimum system specs, or downloading drivers, or whatever else there is. All you need is a disk and a controller.
Of course, the fact that Alex St. John has proven time and again that he’s a loudmouthed buffoon certainly doesn’t HELP his case any.
