If you own a PlayStation 3, then you are probably only too aware of the pain in the ass that is the mandatory install. When Grand Theft Auto IV was released a little more than a month ago, reviews and fans alike (including me) complained about the seven and a half minute mandatory installation. Not only do these installs feel like a freaking eternity, but they are becoming increasingly large in actual file size. Some PS3 owners are already having to juggle which games to have installed, and which games to not have installed.
Bethesda feels your pain, and has vowed that Fallout 3 will not require a hard drive install of any kind on the PlayStation 3:
We do not do that, no. We put the stuff down there that we need to be there, we can stream it in and out of there but we do not do the ‘we need ten minutes of your time.’ We will cache the same way on both (Xbox 360 and PS3) we basically just like everybody you know if you have a hard drive, it does this.
Before you doubt Bethesday, remember that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, a game that even now calls to me in my sleep, did not require a hard drive install of any kind. On a personal level, as somebody who owns several PS3 games that have significant hard drive installs, it is so damn comforting to know that, no matter what I put on my HDD between now and Fallout 3’s release, I’ll still be able to play the game.
