EA Brushes Off Spore DRM Complaints

Sure, EA may be taking some needed steps in the right direction as far as their games go, but they aren’t clear of absolute stupidity just yet. Case in point: EA has justified their use of the “draconian” DRM in Spore because, no joke, only 23% of users have needed to install it more than once.

…yeah.

Speaking with Gamasutra, EA’s Mariam Sughayer had the following to say about EA’s treatment of the DRM issue:

EA has not changed our basic DRM copy protection system… We simply changed the copy protection method from using the physical media, which requires authentication every time you play the game by requiring a disc in the drive, to one which uses a one-time online authentication.

This isn’t untrue, just not telling of the whole story. If you are like me (God help you), you probably will be installing these games four, five, six times or even more. Hell, I still play computer games from 2000 (specifically, Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force) that, if I needed to go through the hoops Spore owners need to go through, I wouldn’t be playing those games.

EA Maxis told their community that you will still be able to install the game on up to three computers at one time, but when you have many people complaining that the game’s DRM is eating up RAM, crashing the game and, in a few cases described in some Amazon user reviews, crashing the player’s OS, EA needs to rethink their position on this device.

Oh, and it doesn’t even work.
