E3: Wii Sports gets a Sequel

I wasn’t a fan of the Nintendo press conference. Nothing wowed me, and in the end, there were any announcements that I didn’t expect or that had me super surprised. Leading up to E3, Nintendo was all hush-hush about what they’d be talking about, and really, if you’re going to do that, you have to deliver in a big way.

But I digress.

One of the games they previewed that did look pretty cool was the Wii Sports sequel, Wii Sports Resort. For most people, Wii Sports was the first game they played on the new system, and it is still a game that is fun to pull out from time to time. The new Wii Sports Resort will expand on that idea – casual gaming that is as fun the fiftieth time you play is as the first time you play it.

What will drive sales is the fact that you’ll get one of the new Wii Motion Plus do-hickies with the game. This new motion peripheral is going to take the Wii into three dimensions, perfecting the controller. I’d be more excited if they announced a new Zelda game to go along with those better controls…but at least Wii Sports Resort looks like fun.

They demonstrated three of the games at the press conference – Frisbee (yawn), Jet-skiing (better), and Sword Fighting (woot!). This is going to be a cash cow for Nintendo, since most Wii owners will buy a copy, and really, I can’t complain too much; I have nothing against party games.

Overall, Wii’s future is all about casual gaming. While there’s nothing wrong with that, I still wish we’d see more Zelda-esque games for the system to make it a great console for gamers and families alike.
