E3: Another Big Year for the DS

Today’s Nintendo press conference was largely about weiner wiggling – but that’s not without merit. The Nintendo DS is leading other handheld consoles (aka, the PSP) in sales 2 to 1, and this year will be another big one for them, in terms of software. The future for the DS is going to hinge on four major titles over the next six to nine months:

  • Guitar Hero On Tour Decades
  • Spore
  • Pokemon Ranger (release date November 10)
  • Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

I think that the big announcement here is the new GTA title. Grand Theft fans are loyal, so this is a smart idea – it will really drive sales of the DS. Spore for the DS looks like a lot of fun too and GH fans will be all over the new Decades games, since they already have the the hardware. The big seller though? Pokemon. You Japanese kids just love that weird little yellow furball! It’ll be the big game of the season, over – maybe not in America, but globally.
