Being a resident of Michigan, I actually know who Kym Worthy is. She is the Prosecutor for Wayne County (that’s where Detroit is, for all you non-Michigan folk) and has developed quite the fascination with protecting children over the past few years.
In 2007, Worthy published a list of ten games that all parents should avoid giving their children. Now, because she’s a complete dope who is barely capable of boiling a pot of coffee let alone practice law, her list was sorely out of date.
Well, at least she was able to keep it somewhat recent this time around…
Over the past year, living in the city of Detroit and being a first-hand witness to the violence in the city has shown Worthy that children are more at risk than ever, and apparently she feels it has fallen on her shoulders to protect them from, well, everything:
The last year has convinced me more than ever that children are at risk of becoming desensitized to violence and can exhibit more aggressive behavior if they repeatedly play certain violent video games.
The [Daniel Sorensen] investigation revealed that the youths would often play violent video games. I believe that certain video games are connected to the proliferation of violent crimes being committed by youthful offenders such as Orlewicz and Letkemann.
The “investigation” she is referring to is that of Daniel Sorensen. In and around Detroit the murder of Sorensen, in which he was stabbed repeatedly and then dismembered and set ablaze by two teenagers, was a big story in Michigan. Because the kids had video games in their house, Worthy seems to think that the games were the primary motivation for murder and mutilation.
Regardless, here is the Top Ten list that Worthy and the National Institute on Media and the Family released, and in (parentheses) is the rating of the game, which I have included to clear things up in case you haven’t gone shopping for your eight year-old yet:
- Blitz the League II (M)
- Dead Space (M)
- Fallout 3 (M)
- Far Cry 2 (M)
- Gears of War 2 (M)
- Left 4 Dead (M)
- Legendary (M)
- Resistance 2 (M)
- Saints Row 2 (M)
- Silent Hill: Homecoming (M)
There seems to be a common thread with all these games, although I can’t quite put my finger on it. Can you? If you have kids, I would certainly hope so.
But let’s pretend for a moment that these games didn’t have ratings. You live in Detroit. One of the most dangerous cities in the world. Maybe you should worry about cleaning up all the crack and gang violence before you worry about what’s in your kid’s Xbox, eh?
Just a suggestion.
