‘CSI’, ‘Lost’ Influences in ‘Halo 3 Recon’

Some new details regarding their expansion to Halo 3, Halo 3 Recon, have been relayed by everyone who doesn’t have a Game Informer subscription by CVG.

In Halo 3 Recon, you play as “The Rookie”, a member of a five-man ODST team that is dropped into New Mombasa during the events of Halo 2.

Yes, Halo 2.

The members of your team are split up throughout New Mombasa and you, as “The Rookie”, are tasked with tracking them down. When in this part of the game, you will be exploring an open world (along the lines of Fallout 3). When you find another member of the ODST, you’ll be presented with a crime scene. From there, a “Lost-style flashback” will trigger, and you’ll get to play through a more traditional Halo-style level as the missing squad mate.

…sounds to me like Bungie has been watching too much television. Or getting high. Or both.

Each of the levels is said to take about 30 minutes to complete, furthering the idea of Halo 3 Recon being about three-to-five hours in length.

Unlike series mainstay (and resident badass) Master Chief, the ODST troops won’t feel so superhuman. They are shorter and slower than Chief, which will most certainly change how lifelong Halo fanboys play their game. The days of leaping 30 feet into the air are over.

One last bit of awesome for all of you: Nathan Fillion (Captain Malcolm Reynolds on Firefly)
will be contributing his voice to the expansion, presumably as the same ODST trooper he briefly voiced in Halo 3. For this reason and this reason alone, this game will be win.
