Blizzard VP Pardo: ‘World of Warcraft’ was supposed to be free

Since it’s a somewhat slow news day, I’m going to tell you all a little story. This little story stars Blizzard Entertainment senior VP Rob Pardo (no relation to Don Pardo), and how he recently told the crowd at the Paris Game Developers Conference that Blizzard’s money printer MMO World of Warcraft was supposed to be a free-to-play game that would be supported by in-game advertising.

You see, kids, Pardo explained that Blizzard didn’t want to charge a subscription fee, but as they researched the market, they quickly learned that they wouldn’t be able to support a game like WoW without charging you $10 a month.

We didn’t want to charge a subscription, but as we researched market conditions, we realized that wouldn’t support us.

Now, now. Don’t you worry, kiddies. Maybe, if Blizzard announces Diablo III like we all want them to, they’ll finally have enough money to throw us cheapskates a bone.

Now grab a juice box and head to bed.
