Beware the Meat Shield!

In this week’s episode of “Mainstream Media presents: zOMG video games are going to kill us all!”, Gears of War 2 is featured because of its ultraviolence and, my favorite part, the incorporation of a new feature that allows you to take an enemy and use him as a meat shield. Citing a story published by Yahoo! Games, the Phoenix News posted a story about GoW2 that featured this lovely little excerpt:

A popular video game for the Xbox 360 is getting a sequel this year – and it seems to be raising eyebrows with its level of gore and detail…

The game certainly attracted attention for its realistic visuals and battle scenes, but caused some pause when game designers showed off a new attack players can use in the game.

The game presents the player with a number of projectile weapons, but also features a chainsaw for melee attacks. In the demo, the player can use the chainsaw to cut a person in half, starting at the groin and moving upwards. Also, players can pick up the corpses of fallen enemies and use them as a “meat shield” to protect themself from enemy fire as they engage in battle from behind the corpse.

Just to clarify a few things: When the game was shown off recently, people who saw the video weren’t so much “paused” as they were standing there with their jaws firmly on the floor, gazing at how absolutely beautiful the game looked. As for the chainsaw, it is simply a carry over from the first game.

Either way, this is only the start of what will probably be a long summer that will include countless “video games are evil! Hiss! Hiss!” stories from all kinds of mainstream news outlets. But hey, it could always be worse; people could be calling it racist.
