Janco Partners’ Mike Hickey is not a fan of the new trailer for THQ’s Saints Row 2 (watch). In fact, Hickey has gone so far as to call the trailer “unusually pompous”, and goes on to say that he expects the sales of Saints Row 2 to be “conservative”.
The trailer directly attacks Grand Theft Auto IV in game content, an unusually pompous position in our view, considering GTA IV is estimated to be the highest grossing 1st week entertainment release of all time – and is currently the highest quality scored game on both the Xbox 360 and PS3 according to Metacritic.com.
We remain conservative on our sales expectations for Saint’s Row 2, in light of mediocre game previews and a delayed release in-part from quality concerns.
If I may be so bold, I don’t think Mr. Hickey “gets it”. The ad that THQ released for Saints Row 2 was supposed to be pompous, “look at me” affair. Hell, the first Saints Row took its share of pot shots at the GTA franchise, and for a while was superior to the franchise it so closely emulates. So don’t go sleeping on Saints Row 2 just yet.
Besides, didn’t SEGA used to do this with Nintendon’t?
